JUMPSTART: OFF THE PAGE 2012
|
|
German Book Office successfully concludes ‘JUMPSTART: OFF THE PAGE 2012’- the annual festival for children’s book trade New Delhi, 28th August, 2012: Jumpstart, a one-off initiative by the German Book Office, New Delhi, focusing on ‘Children’s Literature’ concluded on 24th August 2012 on an energetic, informative, and interactive note. This turbo-charged idea fuelled event was something which the participants looked forward to as much as the team at GBO at work. The halls of India International Centre came alive with discussions, intercations, presentations and much to redefine the future of publishing for children and young adults. While the focus was on migrating content from one media to another, from one discipline to another in a cross-fertilization of ideas, we saw examples of books becoming animated, performances taking off from books and much more. Stories are told on the stage, screen, page and phones- we saw the whole gamut of possibilities and enjoyed the possibilities it opened us up to. From R Sriram taking us through the latest digital platforms to his own subscriber friendly newsletter to Shilo Shiv Suleman’s bursting-with-life Khoya to Hervé Tullet’s extremely engaging collaborative artworks- it all went much beyond the page and still addressed relevant concerns. The event was held at the new wing of Indian International Centre on 23rd and 24th of August 2012, divided into two themes for each day. The first day was all about ‘ Inspiration’ where renowned experts of the subject matter like Hervé Tullet, R.Sriram, Shilo Suleman, Roseman Hutt et al interacted with the attendees on how to cultivate and channel their ideas while letting go of Day 2 was about ‘Perspiration’ with master classes conducted by experts like Phillipa Donovan (Egmart/Smart Quill, UK), Anushka Ravishankar (Duckbill, India) for writers and by Herv`e Tullet for Illustrators. While the master classes addressed the needs of potential and upcoming children’s writers and illustrators, they were attended by others as well. The event concluded with the Book Souk- a Matchmaking for professionals (Writers, Editors, Illustrators, Designers, Story-tellers) from the field of children’s literature who met the Publishers/Editors and pitched their works, a rare opportunity to present and take their work to the next level. At the end of its fourth edition, Jumpstart remains an initiative that ushers in the future for book lovers and publishing professionals alike where tradition meets the modern and where old practices walk hand in hand with the new – a platform where boundaries merge. About the German Book Office- German Book Office (GBO), New Delhi is a joint venture of the Frankfurt Book Fair and the Foreign Ministry of the Federal Republic of Germany. Iran goes all out to make NAM Summit a success
Iran goes all out to make NAM Summit a success
|
Iran has pulled out all stops to ensure a smooth sail of the 16th NAM Summit that will see a number of world leaders including Prime Minister Manmohan Singh coming together, despite the US making its displeasure clear over the gathering in Tehran. From heavy deployment of security, freshly coated railings along the roads to declaring a holiday and strategically putting out banners, Tehran is trying its best to project the summit as a major diplomatic win for the sanction-hit country. The first thing that strikes a visitor to Tehran is the wide smooth highway on which one can easily hit over 150 kms per hour. The landscaping too is beautiful. As you drive down, one will find a number of posters -some of them asserting the country’s right to nuclear energy. ‘Nuclear energy is an undeniable right for Iranians’, reads a banner with the picture of an Iranian nuclear scientist who was killed in a car bomb allegedly by Israel’s spy agency Mossad. Drive further, another banner on top of a flyover reads, ‘Avoid being enslaved since God created you free’. Tehran, which could easily have more flyovers than new Delhi or Mumbai, is largely traffic free with the government declaring holidays to ease congestion on roads. The Iranian capital is known to have one of the worst traffic. “They have declared holidays for the Summit so that there will be less traffic on the road,” a friendly official chips in. Police checkposts have suddenly sprung up on the city roads. An outsider is quickly identified and sharp eyes of the securitymen follow as you walk down. Interestingly, Iran had displayed blast-shredded cars of Iranian nuclear scientist at the entrance to the venue here where the officials from 120 NAM-member states met. Five Iranian nuclear scientists, including a manager at the Natanz enrichment facility, have been killed since 2010. Mostafa Ahmadi Roshan, a chemistry expert and director of the Natanz uranium enrichment facility, became the latest victim when he was killed in a bomb attack in January 2012. For Iran, the Summit is very important and the country, that has been hit by severe US sanctions, is trying to fully exploit the occasion. Iranian Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Amirabdollahian has said that the holding of the Summit in Tehran proves inefficiency of US threats and sanctions against Iran.( |

Sonia accuses BJP of holding Parliament to ransom
Sonia accuses BJP of holding Parliament to ransom
|
Speaking at the Congress Parliamentary Party meeting on Tuesday morning, Sonia Gandhi said that the Government and the Prime Minister are always prepared to discuss any CAG report. She said that the proper forum for debate is Parliament, but it is being held in ransom by blackmail, which has become the bread and butter of BJP. She also made it clear that there is no need to be defensive and asked partymen to rebutt the charges of BJP. Sonia condemns violence in Assam Sonia Gandhi also condemned the violence in Assam and said that the guilty must be brought to justice. She also praised the heartwarming instances when neighbors helped cutting across ethnic and religious identities. Referring the exodus of north east people from Bangalore, she said that they have every constitutional right to study, work and live in any part of the country in complete safety and security. |

This is how we could lose the election:Joe Biden
Naresh –
The pundits and talking heads are talking about how badly we’re being outraised by the other side. You’ve heard it from us, too.
Three months in a row, Mitt Romney and the Republican Party have trounced our fundraising totals. And, along with allied outside groups, they’re using that cash to try to obliterate our side on the airwaves, outspending us in some battleground states by margins of up to three to one.
The pundits are saying this is how we could lose the election. You know what I say?
When you get knocked down, get up. There’s no quit in America. There’s nothing we can’t do.
This week isn’t just the Republican National Convention — it’s also the biggest fundraising deadline this campaign has seen, and one of the last. President Obama and I are counting on you.
Please make a donation of $5 or more today:
https://donate.barackobama.com/All-on-Us
We’ve been counted out more than a few times before. It’s all on us to prove them wrong again.
Thanks,
Joe
P.S. — I’ve seen a lot of good campaigns — with smart, strong candidates and bold visions for the change we need — go down, simply because they couldn’t keep up. Don’t let this campaign be one of them. Donate today.

When I’m out there talking to voters:Barack
Naresh – When I’m out there talking to voters, we talk about what we’ve done, what we plan to do over the next four years, and why the other guys have dangerous plans to go back to the policies that failed America for almost a decade. But there is another question that keeps coming up, and you need to know about it: “Why do I see so many more ads for the other guys?” You don’t need me to tell you that the Romney campaign is outraising us — that billionaire ideologues and corporate interests are piling on tens of millions more in negative ads trashing us, and that all of it means that undecided voters in battleground states like Iowa could be seeing false, misleading, negative attacks at a rate almost twice as often as they hear from us. Last week, when I was in Iowa, voters told me they were feeling it. The numbers back it up: Our side is getting outspent 2-to-1 on the air there. But the folks asking me about this don’t want an explanation — they want to know what I’m going to do about it. And the fact is that solving this problem is up to you. Close the gap on the air by making a donation of $5 or more now. You’re getting this email because you know what the stakes are in this election. You know the facts about what we’ve done to prevent a deeper crisis and to start building an economy that works for the middle class. But for someone who’s not as engaged, these ads may be an important and possibly even primary source of information about the choice in this election. So it’s a bad situation if 90 percent of them are false, negative attacks on us. We’re losing this air war right now. I don’t have as much time to campaign this time as I did in 2008, so this whole thing is riding on you making it happen. Donate now to close the gap on the air: https://donate.barackobama.com/72-Days Thank you, |

Investments plunged nearly 50% in FY’12: RBI report
Growth deceleration that began last fiscal, when GDP
growth slipped to a nine-year low of 6.5 per cent, has been led
primarily by a near 50 per cent dip in new investments in large
projects, the Reserve Bank has said. “Envisaged total fixed
investment by large firms in new projects, which were sanctioned
financial assistance during FY12, dropped by a whopping 46 per cent to
about Rs 2.1 trillion from Rs 3.9 trillion a year ago,” according to the
FY’12 RBI annual report. The drop was led by the infrastructure and
metals sectors, said the recently released report. ”Envisaged
investment in infrastructure declined by 52 per cent to Rs 1 trillion in
FY12 from Rs 2.2 trillion in FY11, led by the power and telecom
sectors,” said the report, quoting data collated from banks and
financial institutions. While investment in the telecom sector has
dried up, that in roads, ports and airports has also decelerated
sharply, it added. Gross bank credit to infrastructure outstanding as of
April 2012 was Rs 6.2 trillion. However, the flow of bank credit to the
sector has decelerated, on the back of policy delays and higher
interest rates, the report noted.
Data on sector-wise gross deployment of bank credit shows that its year-on-year growth has declined to 14 per cent in FY12 compared to 38 per cent growth in FY11. Noting that over half of the envisaged corporate fixed investment in large projects has been coming from the infrastructure space since 2008-09, the report said, its share, however, dropped to 48.6 per cent in FY12 from a high 54.8 per cent a year ago. This massive slippage has had a ripple effect on the economy. Order books of capital goods producing firms have declined as the size of the pie has reduced. Their share has also gone down as they have been out-competed by cheaper imports by foreign firms, points out the report.

Prithvi -II successfully test-fired from ITR .
India’s nuclear-capable Prithvi-II ballistic missile with a
strike range of 350 km was on Saturday successfully test-fired from the
Integrated Test Range near Balasore as part of user trial by the army.
“The flight test of the surface-to-surface missile was conducted around 1100 hrs from a mobile launcher from ITR’s launch complex-III at Chandipur,” defence sources said. Describing the trial of the indigenously developed strategic missile as “fully successful”, ITR Director MVKV Prasad said, “It was a perfect launch. All the mission objectives were accomplished during the trial.”
Prithvi is the first ballistic missile developed under the country’s prestigious Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme and has the capability to carry 500 kg of both nuclear and conventional warheads with a strike range of 350 km. The missile uses advanced inertial guidance system with manoeuvring trajectory. The test-fire of the sophisticated short-range ballistic missile, which has already been inducted into the armed forces, was a user’s trial by the army and monitored by scientists of Defence Research and Development Organisation. The sleek missile is handled by the strategic force command (SFC), they said, adding the trial was conducted to gauge the effectiveness of the weapon in a real time situation.
“The whole exercise was aimed at studying the control and guidance system of the missile besides providing training to the Army, which happens to be the user,” said an official. The state-of-the-art missile is 9 metre-long and is one metre in diameter with liquid propulsion twin engine.
A defence scientist associated with the trial said radars and electro optical systems located along the coast tracked and monitored all the parameters of the missile throughout the flight path.
Prithvi-II has been successfully flight tested several times as part of the training exercise and todays launch again proved its reliability and accuracy, he said. A twin user trial of Prithvi-II missiles planned on December 21, 2011 from ITR had to be deferred due to a technical snag, sources said.
Its trial was, however, a complete success on September 26, 2011 as the missile reached the predefined target in Bay of Bengal with a very high accuracy of better than 10 meters, they said.

Sharmila pips Vani in play-off at Hero-KGA Women’s pro golf
Bangalore, August 24: Sharmila Nicollet found her
form and debutant Vani Kapoor earned a rightful place among the top
women pros in the country with a splendid performance that gave the 2012
season of the Hero-WGAI Tour a great start at the season-opener at the
KGA Golf Course.
Sharmila first rallied from a four-shot deficit to get into a play-off with Vani and then produced two glorious shots on the first play-off hole to emerge as the champion of the Hero-KGA tournament. Sharmila carded a second sub-par round in three days with a bogey-free two-under 70 to total one-over 217, the same as Vani (74). Sharmila was the only player to turn in two sub-par rounds.
In the play-off, Vani was at least 80-yards short off the tee, but hit a great second shot to land on the green, some 12 feet from the pin. But Sharmila’s second shot was less than two feet from the cup. While Vani missed her putt, Sharmila tapped in to win the title.
The KGA course officials did a magnificent job after heavy rains last night. They ensured a playable course and the players responded with a superb final round.
Nalini Singh Siwach (72) played a fine round with one birdie against one bogey for the day’s second best card and edged out seasoned Smriti Mehra (76) to third place. Smriti was fourth and another Bangalore girl, Aditi Ashok, still an amateur, carded 73 and was fifth at 225.
“It was great to win again in Bangalore and at KGA, which is my home course. My coach Tarun (Sardesai) decided to come on the bag today and he told me that he wanted me to study the lines and putt. That helped my confidence and I am so glad that I did myself proud with a bogey-free round,” said Sharmila, who picked up Rs. 2,62,500 as the winner’s cheque.
“Starting the day four behind Vani, who was brilliant in her debut as a pro, my goal was to keep bogeys off the card and the birdies would come by themselves. That’s what happened. Tarun did not read a single line for me and by the end of the day, I felt very confident, as I don’t want to be dependant on someone else to read putts for me,” she added.
For Vani, it was a bitter-sweet debut. “It would have been great to start a pro career with a win, but a second-place is fine. I am happy with the way I played and I am sure I will keep learning. Sharmila was fantastic today. She made no mistakes. I wanted to close in the regulation and I know she hits the ball really long, but it did not happen for me,” said the 18-year-old Vani, who last year won a pro event, while still being an amateur.
“I had two birdies and two bogeys on front nine and Sharmila closed the lead from four to two on the first stretch. Then I suppose I tried a bit too hard and bogeyed the 14th and 15th to allow her to catch up. But hats off to Sharmila for great golf and I enjoyed playing with her.”
Sharmila birdied the first hole to set up momentum and exert pressure on Vani. She added another on seventh and then played pars for the next 11 holes. “I tried not to get frustrated with missed putts and just ensured I did not drop any shots,” said Sharmila.
Final results:
Leading scores (After three rounds):
217: Sharmila Nicollet (71-76-70); Vani Kapoor (75-68-74)
Sharmila won in first play-off hole
222: Nalini Singh Siwach (74-76-72)

Protest against Coalgate scam
For protesting against the massive Coalgate scam that took
place with collusion of Congress and BJP, India Against Corruption wouldgherao the
houses of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and BJP President Nitin Gadkari
on August 26, 2012 (Sunday). A peaceful protest would take place at
Jantar Mantar from 10am onwards followed by the gherao to demand immediate cancellation of coal block allocation and setting up of an independent Special Investigation Team (SIT).
Both the major parties – BJP and Congress – have been closely
involved in this Rs 1.86 lakh coal scam, considered to one of the major
scams till date. Along with BJP and Congress, CPM and BJD has also
played a major role in the plunder of this natural resource.
While it is known that the Central Government allocated coal blocks
to private players in an arbitrary manner even to underwear, cassette
and gutka manufacturing companies, the role of various state
governments in the allotment process is also highly questionable. On one
hand, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh who was also the Coal Minster
during 2006-2009, gave away coal block at throw away prices to private
companies without following a transparent competitive bidding process on
the pretext that it would lead to cheaper electricity. On the other
hand, heads of various state governments including former Rajasthan
Chief Minister Vasundhra Raje Scindia (BJP), Chattisgarh CM Raman Singh
(BJP), Orissa CM Naveen Patnaik (BJD) and former West Bengal CM Budhadeb
Bhattacharya (CPM) had written to Central Government advising against
the bidding process.
Speaking on the issue Arvind Kejriwal said, “Not only centre but
many state government comprising the Left, Right and Centre have
colluded to plunder this country. If the total loss in this scam is
estimated to be approximately 2 lakh crores, considering that there are 6
lakh villages in India, 30 lakhs were looted from each village.”
Now when the scam has come to light, Congress and BJP have colluded
to stall the proceedings of the both the houses. Day before yesterday,
what happened in Rajya Sabha is highly condemnable with Rajiv Shukla
walking upto the Deputy Chairperson PJ Kurien and whispering to adjourn
the house. Ironically, within minutes the house got adjourned. Today,
for the third day both the houses were adjourned without much debate on
the root cause of the issue.
While the BJP kept on demanding the resignation of PM knowing the
fact that UPA was never going to let that happen. If the opposition was
really worried about the scam it would have asked for an open debate in
the Parliament instead of focusing on resignation of Prime Minister. The
resignation of Prime Minister in no way would lead to unearthing the
depth of the coalgate scam but an independent investigation certainly
would. On the other hand, if the UPA was serious about getting to the
bottom of the issue Rajiv Shukla instead of asking the deputy speaker to
adjourn the house would have asked for a debate by ignoring the ruckus
created by the opposition. Unfortunately, none of the parties raised
their voice for this. Sharing his views, Kumar Vishwas said, “BJP is not
interested in a debate because of its involvement in the scam. If a
debate ensues, names of many BJP chief ministers who were involved in
this plunder would also come out.”
Speaking on the issue Sanjay Singh said, “All parties are united on
the issues of corruption. If Congress is looting the country’s
resources at the Central level, states where BJP is in power is also not
far behind.”
The Coalgate scam has overtaken the 2G spectrum scam which was
being considered the biggest scam so far. If the Supreme Court had
recently cancelled licenses of private players in 2G spectrum scam, why
can’t the licenses of coal blocks be cancelled? To demand for setting up
of SIT as well as cancellation of the license IAC would organise a
massive protest at Jantar Mantar on August 26, 2012 from 10 am onwards,
followed by the gherao of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and BJP
President Nitin Gadkari house simultaneously.
