Consumption tax bills enacted in Japan diet

Six smaller opposition parties challenged the legislation by submitting a no-confidence motion against the Noda Cabinet. The motion was voted down in the Lower House on Thursday and thus pave way for Consumption tax bills to be enacted in Japan diet.

Japan's Diet has enacted a set of bills to raise the consumption tax and reform social security. The legislation will double the consumption tax to 10 percent by 2015. Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda,  said he would stake his political life on having the bills approved.The bills passed the opposition-controlled Upper House on Friday, with the help of the main opposition Liberal Democratic Party and its ally, New Komeito. The legislation had cleared the Lower House in June.

Noda secured the two parties' backing, in return for a pledge to dissolve the Lower House and call a snap general election "soon" after the bills are enacted. The Liberal Democratic Party is demanding a dissolution before the current Diet session ends on September 8. But Noda is not saying when he might do this.
