Former Turkish leader Demirel dead at 90
Suleyman Demirel, who intermittently led Turkey for over three decades as prime minister and president, has died at the age of 90. Demirel had been being treated in an Ankara hospital for a respiratory infection. The politician, known to his supporters as Baba, or Father, served five different stints as prime minister starting in 1965, despite the fact he was twice toppled and even banned from politics for 7 years. Demirel served as Turkey’s President between 1993 and 2000.
