Court remands in custody 17 Turkish policemen accused of illegal wiretapping
A Turkish court remanded 17 detained policemen in custody ahead of a trial over their alleged illegal wiretapping of politicians, civil servants and businessmen, according to Turkish media cited by Reuters. Twenty-one police officers were detained in raids which were carried out a week ago in 12 cities. All of them are suspected of trying to overthrow the government or obstruct its duties by wiretapping, recording of private data, breaching the right to privacy and forming a terrorist organisation, the private Dogan news agency said. Seventeen of the group were placed under formal arrest in preparation for trial. The policemen’s lawyers argue the case is politically motivated and connected to Tayyip Erdogan's campaign against his opponent, US-based Muslim cleric Fethullah Gulen.
