GLOBAL ECONOMIC MONITOR
August 2014

A mixed pattern of growth is reported across OECD countries for the second quarter of 2014.  Overall, OECD GDP increased 0.4%, up from 0.2% in the previous quarter. In the United States , real GDP growth rebounded strongly and in the United Kingdom also growth remained robust in the second quarter of 2014. In Euro area and the European Union, GDP growth remained positive , however in Japan and Germany , GDP was  contracted.

With respect to Industry performance, Russia’s Manufacturing PMI rose for the fourth month and moving up to 51.0 in July. Overall PMI for all countries exhibited expansionary trend in their respective industrial sector as the PMI remained above 50 mark. Inflation scenario signaled a slight fall in already declining inflation rates all over the world. Russian inflation declined marginally to 7.5% and US inflation rate declined to 2% in July.

The monetary stances of major economies observed a cautious approach and kept their bank rates stable. The European Central Bank (ECB) kept its benchmark interest rate at the record low of 0.15% for the second month in a row in spite of the weakness of the recovery in the Euro Zone and the threat of a deflation.

The key stock indices have shown a downward trend in the month of August with exception of DJIA of US and SENSEX of India. The stock market in Germany , Japan and China have shown downward trends, while, stock market in US and India have been the only exception, presenting an upward trend. On global commodity front, the FAO Food Price Index declined 2.1% to 203.9 points in July 2014, and further reported persistence of volatility in international sugar prices.

In addition, US trade gap declined to five-month low in June as imports dropped the most in a year and exports increased slightly. In Asia, China’s trade surplus increased to US$ 47.3 bn in July beating market forecasts, due to increase in exports and decline in imports.  In a major step to attain greater transparency and putting an end to banking secrecy in tax matters, OECD released full report of new global standard for the exchange of information between jurisdictions.

GEM for the month of August 2014 is attached.

We welcome your suggestions and comments for the same.

The world is watching

LEADERS ARE NOT BORN, LEADERS ARE MADE  –  THE RIGHT TYPE OF UPBRINGING, SCHOOLING, SURROUNDINGS, TRAINING ETC. ARE SOME OF THE PRE-REQUISITES WHICH SHAPE & MAKE A LEADER.

Everybody should know the fact that the absurd most leadership myth is that leaders are born, that there is a genetic factor to leadership. This myth asserts that people simply either have certain charismatic qualities or not. That’s nonsense. In fact, the opposite is true. Leaders are made rather than born.

Leadership is about tapping the wellspring of human motivation and about fundamental relations with one’s fellows. Never tell people how to do things. Tell them what to do and they will surprise you with their ingenuity.

Effective leadership is not about making speeches or being liked, leadership is defined by results not attributes.

Men make history and not the other way around. In periods where there is no leadership, society stands still. Progress occurs when courageous, skillful leaders seize the opportunity to change things for the better.

All of the great leaders have had one characteristic in common : it was the willingness to confront unequivocally the major anxieties of their people in their times. This, and not much else, is the essence of leadership.

A GOOD LEADER :-

1) Practises good communication. Good communication involves listening to what people have to say. Uses his active listening skills, making sure that he has really understood what is being conveyed to him. Asks appropriate questions where ever necessary to help understand and gather the information for the attainment of pre-set goals.

2) Is flexible with his leadership style as the inexperienced under him will need a more directive style than those who are experienced. Empowers and trusts the experienced to the extent necessary. Involves the knowledgeable & experienced in his decision making.

3) Builds trust as without trust there is no relationship. Does as he says he will and acts with integrity. Is human and authentic in his dealings with everyone.

4) Sets goals for those whom he commands. Gives them a vision, i.e. a something to strive for. With the inexperienced he may set the goals for them, with the more experienced discuss the goals with them. Makes sure that the goals he sets are specific, challenging yet attainable.

5) Communicates his expectations. Lets people know what is expected of them and cross checks that they have understood him thoroughly.

6) Assesses & figures out what it is that they need from him as their leader. Do they need direction or do they just need him to get out of the way of the firing line and provide support from behind and/or the sidelines.

7) Monitors the achievements of those whom he commands appropriately & fairly. The inexperienced will require closer monitoring than the more experienced.

8) Provides those whom he commands the feedback about them based on their achievements and/or failures. Feedback helps people specifically with the tasks they are involved with and also make them feel valued. Everyone likes to feel that what they are doing is worthwhile and valued.

9) It is very important that he engages the hearts as well as the minds of those whom he commands as it is this combination that delivers the impossible.

True leadership is about understanding people and involving them to help you achieve your goals. That takes all of the good characteristics, like integrity, being cool headed, dedication of purpose, selflessness, compassion, toughness where ever necessary, knowledge, skill, implacability, the will power & determination to succeed & to never accept failures.

PM Bad Speech Writers Per Capita Salary of Teachers $25
September06, 2014 (C) Ravinder Singh ravinderinvent@gmail.com
I have heard of BRAIN DRAIN issue for over 40 years – this Biggest
Tragedy of India. GoI instead of Supporting and Promoting Indian
Inventors, Engineers & Scientists had engaged TRADERS in to Industry
and Manufacturing and other services.
India is already spending Rs.100,000 crores on Indians enrolled in
foreign countries for higher education whereas – as I found out per
capita Indian Teachers Salary Expenditure is barely $25.
Firstly it important to know – I know for over 40 years that all the
Best Scientists, Engineers and Doctors – 80% of IITians, AIIMS Doctors
produced by Indian Education System migrated to foreign countries.
Majority of Doctors in UK Healthcare are Indians and substantial
numbers are teachers also. I know many from Punjab who were teachers
in BURMA almost 80 years ago.
Not just teachers even Professors in USA are backbone of US Higher
Education System. R&D institutions in Foreign Countries and India also
employ millions of Engineers.
There are 9.7m School Teachers earning around $25b to $30b salary
which for a 1.25b population comes to just $25 or less.
I couldn’t go through the entire speech but stories told are not very
impressive.

10-points from PM Narendra Modi’s Teacher’s Day speech
TNN Sep 5, 2014
In the first mass contact programme of its kind, Prime Minister
Narendra Modi today, on the occasion of Teachers’ Day interacted live
with millions of young students and teachers across the nation.
1. Showing concern about the dwindling importance of teaching
profession in the eyes of youth, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said
that there is need to find out why the value of a teacher has lost its
sheen and why students don’t want to be teachers when they grow up.
2. The Prime Minister said there is a great demand for good teachers
in the world, and India being a young country should be able to
produce good quality teachers for the world.
3. PM Modi talked about the importance of teachers and called for the
need of creating good quality teachers in the country who could be
‘exported’ to the world. He said people who had achieved something in
life and taken to a profession such as doctors and engineers should
teach students in a school for one period in a week.
4. Talking about the significance of Teachers’ Day, PM Modi remembered
Dr Radhakrishnan and said serving the nation does not only mean doing
grand things; doing small things is a big service to the nation.
5. PM Modi reiterated what he had said on his Independence-Day speech
of having toilet facilities for girl students in every school.
6. Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that nation building should
become a national movement and every individual should be associated
with it.
7. Giving encouragement to girl-education, PM said an educated girl
further educates at least two more families.
8. Inspirational lives of great personalities help in shaping our
character, PM Modi called the students to read biographies to explore
about the lives of great people.
9. Describing himself as a ‘taskmaster’, PM Modi said he worked hard
and expected the same from others. He added he expected work to be
completed on time.
10. Modi concluded his speech by saying that a teacher must play an
important role through a person’s life. A teacher-student relationship
must always be nurtured. Keep the child in you alive. Keep smiling and
playing.

AAP : Arvind letter to President of India

J&K MEGA Floods, Third In Himalayas Four Years- Build Dams
September07, 2014 (C) Ravinder Singh
Floods in Kashmir are third Reminder of Nature to India & Pakistan to
build storage dams as soon as possible.
2010 floods devastated Pakistan – worse than triple disasters of
Earthquake, Tsunami and Nuclear Power Reactors Meltdown in Japan.
Uttarakhand Tragedy was worst in terms of loss of life last year.
Floods in Jammu & Kashmir underway this year are latest reminder to
India and Pakistan to build Multipurpose Dams with Storage to STOP
Floods.
In the following PK river flow data – Jhelum River flows on
September05, 2014 were 310,000 cusecs in to Mangla Dam and Dam
releases were just 15,000 cusecs that SAVED down stream of floods –
controlled releases for Irrigation. Foods in Jhelum were partly
absorbed in Lakes, storages in Mangla Dam on Jhelum River completely
prevented floods over 500,000 cusecs down stream of Mangla Dam in
Pakistan.
1,500,000 Cusec Flows From India 50% Absorbed 4 Storage Dams
Chenab River (Baglihar Dam and other ROR Projects) have no storages –
floods in Pakistan are almost 500,000 cusecs – this doesn’t include
down stream of Dams on Ravi, Beas and Satluj and Medium Rivers like
Tawi which alone was discharging say 200,000 cusecs.
Foods releases from just Three Rivers Chenab, Jhelum and Tawi exceed
1000,000 Cusecs.
Without Four Storage dams Bhakra, Pong, Thein and Mangal Pakistan
would have been hit by over 1.5 million cusecs of CUMULATIVE PEAK
Indus River Floods Just From Indian Side – which is 50% more than 2010
PEAK INDUS FLOWS of around 9,50,000 cusecs.
Without Bhakra, Mangla, Pong & Thein Dams Pakistan Punjab Would Have
Been SEVERELY Hit.
UP and Bihar are getting SEVERE floods every year in absence of
Storage Dams in Himalayas in Ganga Dams. Delhi too is VULNERABLE to
floods.
India Has 200000 MW, Pakistan 100000 MW Hydro Potential

The Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) is vigorously carrying out
feasibility studies and engineering designs for various hydropower
projects with accumulative generation capacity of more than 25000 MW.
Most of these studies are at an advance stage of completion. After the
completion of these projects the installed capacity would rise to
around 42000 MW by the end of the year 2020. Pakistan has been blessed
with ample water resources but could store only 13% of the annual flow
of its rivers. The storage is fast depleting due to sedimentation. In
contrast US has developed 497% storage capacity of annual flow of
River Colorado; Egypt possesses 281% of River Nile and India 35% on
Sutlej-Bias Basin. All these statistics warrant construction of number
of reservoirs to enhance availability of water which stands at 1011
cubic meter per capita. Anything below 1000 cubic meter tantamount to
a crisis situation. The hydropower potential in Pakistan is over
100,000 MW with identified sites of 59000 MW. Currently, studies under
way include Diamer Basha (4500 MW), Bunji (7100 MW) and Kohala (1100
MW) amongst many others.
Pakistan with 185 billion tons of coal reserves, the fourth largest in
the world, is under utilizing this resource. In the overall energy
mix, the share of coal power is only 7% as compared to world average
of 40%. Coal is the main source for producing cheaper electricity and
the Government has decided to enhance the share of coal in the overall
energy mix of upto 18% in 2030. The Government is striving hard to
minimize the gap between consumption and generation of electricity at
affordable rate.

Letter seeking effective curbs on crimes against women

Letter seeking effective curbs on crimes against women

Respected friends
       Vandematram

Subject: Demand Letter seeking effective curbs on crimes against women and burgeoning illegal trade of drugs and vulgarity; and invitation for an Open Debate at Constitution Club, New Delhi
You must be aware that illegal/legal trade of different addictions (drugs, liquor, tobacco and others) and vulgarity or nudity through films, electronic and print media or websites is taking place (or being calculatedly run) by Indian or foreign individuals/organisations in our country. The trade has assumed the gigantic form. It is no more a secrete now that a number of market forces are calculatedly trying to damage the intelligence of your youth, family institution and the social fabric. This is a deep-rooted conspiracy causing huge damage to the nation. During the last a few years not only different Commissions, Committees or social organisations, but also the Supreme Court has advised to curb all those who are running or expanding this illegal trade. The efforts in this direction on the part of the government are almost nil and the society is fast degrading.
Armed with the research and studies conducted by Maulik Bharat Trust and hundreds of our associated organisations we jointly place the following demands before the government:
1.      The production and sell of any kinds of drug should be made fully transparent and the transaction should be allowed only through debit/credit cards.
2.      An effective mechanism for putting a control/ban on addictions should be ensured by bringing all the laws related to different addictions in the Concurrent List.
3.      An effective mechanism with exemplary action should be evolved and implemented punishing all those who are involved in production or trade of different illegal drugs.
4.      An extensive campaign be conducted in all educational and health institutions to educate the people about the harms of the drugs.
5.      All Ministries in coordination with other ministries should formulate and implement a collective action plan so that the Indian and Constitutional values could be saved.
6.      A campaign should be launched to identity and take strict action against all those government officials who due to any reason ignore the activities of the people involved in illegal trade of production, distribution or sell of the drugs.
7.      The vulgar material damaging the Indian cultural ethos through films, advertisements, television, print media and any other medium of communication should be banned forthwith. Definition of vulgarity should be made clear. Apart from it, the producers, directors, photographers and artists involved in any kind of nude/vulgar scene, photo, painting or business should be banned and action should be taken against them.
8.      The porn websites being made available in India through foreign websites should be blocked immediately as has been done by China. All internet service providers should be forced to set up their servers in our country.
9.      India should withdraw its permission granted through the United Nations Organisations to allow porn sites in India.
10.  All steps, which protect the dignity of women and provide healthy atmosphere to children and adolescents for development should be taken.
In order to understand the policies and intention of the government in this regard Maulik Bharat has decided to organise on Open Debate at Constitution Club, Rafi Marg, New Delhi, on September 27 at 10 am. You are requested to kindly attend the function and provide your valuable suggestions.
Please provide your written consent to support our initiative and sanction for attending the function so that we can make proper arrangements.
Thanks
Waiting for positive action
