Government needs to come clean on Chinese incursions
The Aam Aadmi Party expresses its deep concern over the worsening situation at the Line of Actual Control. The Prime Minister had given the nation an impression that he had raised the issue of border dispute with the visiting Chinese President strongly and the issue was to be resolved. But the media reports suggest that the situation at the LAC has rather worsened after the PM-Chinese President meet. Army Chief';s decision to cancel his proposed Bhutan visit indicates that the situation at the LAC is alarming.
It may be recalled that Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi had taken an extreme stand on the issue at the time of the then Foreign Minister';s visit to Beijing following Chinese incursion in Depsang Sector in Laddakh in 2013. He had advised the UPA government to either take a tough stand against Chinese expansionism or go and drown itself (Doob Maro). The Aam Aadmi Party does not believe in this kind of irresponsible rhetoric and would respect the long standing tradition of cross party consensus on matters of foreign policy. In any case, we do not believe in jingoism or war mongering. At the same time, commitment to peaceful co-existence must not mean refusal to face basic facts.
The fact is that Chinese incursion in Chumar is much bigger in scale and with a clear long term intent, compared to the incursions in 2013. It is significant that this has taken place after the new leadership in China has established itself and at the time of the visit of the Chinese President to India. His remarks to the People';s Liberation Army (Chinese Army), to prepare for victory in a regional battle, acquire an ominous ring in this context.
The BJP';s U-turn in this matter, like so many other matters after coming to power, has long term consequences for country';s national interest. Therefore, Aam Aadmi Party demands that the Government of India must come out clean on what exactly is the situation at Chumar sector near the LAC. The government also needs to explain what exactly prompted the Chief of Army Staff to cancel his visit to Bhutan. Does the government accept the Chinese policy of quietly shifting the LAC while discussing business with India? If not, what exactly is the new regime';s policy vis-a-vis China.
It';s important to get answers to these questions at this critical juncture of Sino-Indian relations.
Regards,
AAP Media Cell
