Thai opposition protesters vow to fight ‘to the end’

Thai opposition protesters vow to fight
Anti-government protesters in Thailand on Saturday refused to end their rallies and vowed to fight “to the end”, even as embattled premier Yingluck Shinawatra’s government planned to step up its operation to clear demonstration sites.
The police on Friday launched “Operation Valentine” to clear public areas, marking a shift from earlier government policy as so far Yingluck had not taken any action, allowing protesters to take over state buildings, major intersections and set up tents on the road.
There were no violent clashes even after more than 1,500 police officers, donning helmets and carrying protective shields, dismantled a sprawling protest camp near the Government House on Friday.
Protest leader Suthep Thaugsuban said he will not negotiate with Yingluck’s government and declared the ongoing protests will end when she quits and a People’s Council is set up.
Suthep said there have been several proposals from parties to mediate talks to solve the stalemate.
“I would like to make it clear, there is nothing to negotiate. Our stance is clear. We will fight to the end, just win or lose,” he said.
His remarks came in the wake of operations by the Centre for Maintaining Peace and Order (CMPO) to reclaim areas occupied by anti-government protesters.
“I have noting to negotiate. It’s easy to end our protests, Yingluck (Shinawatra), the prime minister, just quits and the people’s government and people’s legislative council are established to push for the country’s reform,” he said.
There was high drama on Friday as thousands of police personnel with riot shields fanned out to reclaim areas.
Almost a 1,000 policemen had to retreat from a rally site in the capital after a stand-off with demonstrators as protest leader Luang Pu Buddha Issara, a monk, refused to move from the area and vowed to get more supporters.
Meanwhile, Caretaker Labour Minister and chief of CMPO Chalerm Yoobamrung vowed to step up the operation to evict anti-government protesters.
Anti-government demonstrators have occupied major intersections in Bangkok and blocked several government ministries to pressure Yingluck to make way for an unelected “People’s Council” to carry out reforms aimed at curbing the dominance of the Shinawatra clan.
The protesters accuse Yingluck of acting as a puppet for her brother Thaksin Shinawatra who was ousted in a coup in 2006.
He lives in self-imposed exile in Dubai to escape a jail term for graft.

Eighteen people feared dead in Nepal plane crash

18 people feared dead in Nepal plane crash
All 18 people, including a foreigner and an infant, on board a small plane were feared killed on Sunday when it crashed in bad weather while on its way from a popular tourist resort to a town in western Nepal.
The 19-seater Twin Otter of Nepal Airlines took off from Pokhara airport at 12:40 pm and disappeared 15 minutes later.”The aircraft with 15 passengers and three crew members, which flew from 12.40 pm from Pokhara airport lost contact with the airport tower minutes after take off,” according to Nepal Airlines officials.
It later found crashed in a jungle at Khidim of Arghakhanchi district.
Though, the condition of the passengers is not yet known, all 18 people on board, are feared dead, authorities said.
The aircraft was carrying 14 Nepalese passengers, including an infant and a Danish citizen.
As per the preliminary reports bad weather was the cause behind the accident.
The accident site was spotted, where fire flames were seen and army and civilian helicopters have been mobilised to carry out rescue operations.
In December, the EU put all of Nepal’s airlines on a blacklist, citing safety fears.
In September 2012, a plane operated by Nepal’s Sita Air crashed near Kathmandu airport, killing 19 people.
In May 2012, 15 people died when an Agni Air plane carrying Indian pilgrims to a Hindu religious site in northern Nepal crashed at a high-altitude airport.

Brazil rations water in its worst drought

Over 140 Brazilian cities have been pushed to ration water during the worst drought on record, according to a survey conducted by the country’s leading newspaper. Some neighborhoods only receive water once every three days.
Water is being rationed to nearly 6 million people living in a total of 142 cities across 11 states in Brazil, the world’s leading exporter of soybeans, coffee, orange juice, sugar and beef. Water supply companies told the Folha de S. Paulo newspaper that the country’s reservoirs, rivers and streams are the driest they have been in 20 years. A record heat wave could raise energy prices and damage crops.
Some neighborhoods in the city of Itu in Sao Paulo state (which accounts for one-quarter of Brazil’s population and one-third of its GDP), only receive water once every three days, for a total of 13 hours.

Venezuelan police contain crowd after mass anti-govt protest

Venezuelan police have deployed water cannons and used tear gas against crowds of angry stone-throwing protesters in Caracas. Activists unhappy with the economic course of President Nicolas Maduro have been resorting to sporadic violence since Wednesday.
Police clashed with a crowd of protesters who attempted to block a Caracas highway. The violence erupted in the late evening after hundreds of thousands of supporters and opponents of Venezuela’s leftist government had gone home.
About 3,000 opponents dressed in white and carrying red, blue and yellow Venezuelan flags gathered in the capital earlier on Saturday demanding the release detained students and other opposition activists.

Ex-Egyptian President Morsi’s terrorism trial begins

Ousted Egyptian president Mohamed Morsi appeared in court Sunday, facing charges of conspiring with foreign agencies to carry out terrorist attacks in Egypt. Prosecutors are calling it “the biggest case of conspiracy in the history of Egypt” and have presented a “terrorist plan” going back to 2005 that implicates Palestinian group Hamas, the government of Iran and the Lebanese political group Hezbollah, Reuters reported. The court action is seen as a further crackdown against the Muslim Brotherhood, the group that lifted Morsi to power in the 2012 presidential election. The Brotherhood has been forced underground since the army took power in July following massive public protests against his rule. The Egyptian government has declared the Brotherhood a terrorist group and has killed about 1,000 of its members and jailed thousands of others. A total of 35 people connected to Morsi also face trial. The Brotherhood, meanwhile, accuses the Egyptian army of staging a coup and restoring a dictatorship, a charge the military brass denies.

Tunisia militants ambush government security forces

A group described as Islamist militants attacked security forces in an ambush near the border with Algeria, killing four people, Tunisia’s interior ministry said on Sunday, according to reports by reuters and AP. The ministry statement said the militants opened fire on a vehicle driving along a road in the northwest of the country, killing a prison official, a civilian and wounding two others. The band then attacked security officials who arrived to investigate the incident, killing two members of the National Guard and wounding two others. The Islamist militants were disguised as security officials and had stolen weapons and a vehicle, according to the state news agency TAP. The report did not name any group as being responsible for the attack.

Passenger plane with 18 on board goes missing in Nepal

A Nepal Airlines plane carrying 15 passengers, including one infant, and three crew members went missing on Sunday afternoon shortly after taking off from a popular tourist resort, police and airline officials said. Nepal police spokesman KC Ganesh told AFP that the Nepal Airlines plane took off from Pokhara airport at 1:30 pm and disappeared 15 minutes later. “One of the passengers is from Denmark,” spokesman Ram Hari Sharma told AFP. “The rest of the passengers are from Nepal. The airline has alerted police to find the plane’s location” and is “preparing for rescue operations,” Sharma said. The state-owned aircraft was travelling from Pokhara to the town of Jumla, 353 kilometers (220 miles) west of the capital Kathmandu, when air traffic controllers lost contact with the cockpit.

Pro-Syrian hackers dump 1 million Forbes user details

Hours after hacking Forbes’ website and several Twitter accounts relating to the magazine, the Syrian Electronic Army group published account details of more than 1 million Forbes users. The information leaked includes usernames, emails and passwords. Among the accounts compromised are those with system administration and author privileges at the site. The magazine confirmed the hack and advised its users to change their passwords. The hackers’ group, which proclaims its support for the Syrian government, said it had targeted Forbes because the magazine “posted many articles against the SEA, with much hate for Syria.”

’Possible radiological event’ investigated at New Mexico’s nuclear waste repository

The US Department of Energy is monitoring for a “possible radiological event” at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant in New Mexico’s nuclear waste repository. Officials have been called in after an air monitor detected radiation in the facility’s underground levels late Friday night, when no employees were on shift. Workers on the surface have been sheltered in place as a precaution. So far, the probe has not revealed any contaminated persons. The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant is a depository of plutonium-contaminated waste taken from a number of federal nuclear projects including Los Alamos National Laboratory. It is the US’s only deep geological nuclear waste repository.

No clashes recorded at Bahrain’s opposition anniversary rally

No clashes with security forces were reported in Bahrain on Suturday as tens of thousands attended peaceful demonstrations to mark the third anniversary of an uprising against the ruling monarchy by majority Shiite Muslims. The rally was organized by the kingdom’s main opposition al-Wefaq movement and saw crowds of men, women and children take to the streets of the small Gulf nation, home of the US fifth fleet. On Friday, a policeman died after being wounded by a “terrorist” blast, the Interior Ministry said. Three other policemen were wounded the same day, while 26 people were arrested in clashes.

Turkish parliament hands government more judiciary control

After a night of heated debate and a brawl that left one MP hospitalized, Turkey’s parliament on Saturday passed a law that gives the government more power to appoint judges and prosecutors. The debate focused on the Higher Council of Judges and Prosecutors (HSYK), the body responsible for appointing members of the judiciary. Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan blames the influential US-based cleric Fethullah Gulen – who has built up quiet influence in the police and judiciary – for stirring up a corruption investigation he sees as being used to unseat him. The opposition party CHP said on Thursday that it would appeal the bill to the Constitutional Court if it was approved in parliament.

UN agency prevented from aid distribution at Yarmouk camp in Syria

Food and basic supplies are running dangerously low in the Yarmouk refugee camp in Syria, UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) announced, urging for speedy access of humanitarian aid. “We have not distributed food there over a week now, which is potentially life-threatening for the besieged civilians trapped by the conflict and desperately dependent on UNRWA for food and basic medicines,” said UNRWA spokesperson Chris Gunness, clarifying that fighting that broke out on 7 February forced the agency to temporarily suspend its activities.

Motorcycle gunmen kill Tel Aviv man in broad daylight

A man was killed in Tel Aviv in a drive-by shooting, in what Israeli police fear to be the latest in a spree of gang-related violence. Two gunmen on a motorcycle killed a man in broad daylight near the beachfront as families and tourists walked by. “The murder is suspected to be part of a criminal turf war … The shooters fled the scene in a getaway vehicle,” police said on Twitter. In February three car bombings targetted individual figures in the Israeli criminal world. Israel’s Internal Defense Minister, Yitzhak Aharonovitch, described the outburst of violence as “terrorism plain and simple.”

Eight more die of swine flu in Egypt – Health Ministry

A further eight people have died of H1N1 swine flu, the Egyptian Health Ministry reported on Saturday, meaning that since December, 52 fatal cases in total have been reported, with 182 overall having been confirmed since last Tuesday alone. Ahmed Kamel, the Health Ministry’s media consultant identified those especially vulnerable to the illness as those over 65, children under 2, people with respiratory problems, and people with diabetes.

Protesters will not vacate seized buildings in Kiev despite amnesty– opposition leader

The Ukrainian opposition will not consider vacating the administrative buildings seized by protesters in central Kiev despite a government amnesty, according to “Fatherland” opposition party head Arseniy Yatsenyuk. He also said that the main goal of his party at the forthcoming session in Parliament is the return to the constitution as it was in 2004. Yatsenyuk believes that if the session does not achieve the goal “it means the government is escalating the situation, and the decision will be taken not in Parliament, but on the streets”. Ukraine has been gripped by anti-government protests since November, with the opposition calling for Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovich to resign. In January Yanukovich granted the arrested rioters amnesty, demanding the vacation of government buildings in turn.

Germany, France to discuss EU communications avoiding US

German Chancellor Angela Merkel plans to discuss building an anti-NSA European communication network with French President Francois Hollande on Wednesday during her visit to France, she said. “Above all, we’ll talk about European providers that offer security for our citizens, so that one shouldn’t have to send emails and other information across the Atlantic. Rather, one could build up a communication network inside Europe,”Merkel said. Holande confirmed that the two countries have been negotiating on the issue. Merkel has been calling for strengthening data protection in Europe following the revelations made by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden regarding US mass surveillance in Europe.

Clashes as Kurds demonstrate across Turkey for leader release

Thousands of Kurds rallied in towns across southeastern Turkey on Sunday, demanding the release of Kurdish rebel leader Abdullah Ocalan, in commemoration of the 15th anniversary since he was first captured. In Diyarbakir, the main city in the southeast, the demonstrators fought with police in side streets, according to Reuters, while in Cizre, near the Iraqi border, protesters lobbed petrol bombs as police retaliated with tear gas. Ocalan is leader of the PKK – the Kurdistan Workers Party – and is regarded by Turkey as being responsible for tens of thousands of deaths. For Kurds, Ocalan represents the struggle for self-determination and political rights. While peace talks began in late 2012, there was a rebel withdrawal in Septamber due to the apparent lack of progress the Turkish government made in addressing their concerns.

PC to roll Interim budget 2014

16022014

P Chidambaram to present interim budget tomorrow
Finance Minister P Chidambaram may dole out some sops while doing a tightrope walk to keep the fiscal deficit under check when he presents the interim budget for 2014-15 in Parliament on Monday ahead of the Lok Sabha elections.
Along with the budget, he will present a vote-on-account to seek Parliament’s sanction for spending till July.
By tradition, the interim budget does not contain proposals seeking to tinker with direct taxes, nor are there any policy announcements, although there may be some sops for the common man and sectors that need help.
Earlier, Chidambaram had indicated he may tweak excise duties and service tax rates in the interim budget in an apparent bid to boost the economy, but he may not pursue key reform legislation due to lack of political consensus.
“In 2004, Mr Jaswant Singh made a 12-page speech. In 2009, Mr Mukherjee made an 18-page speech. So I have two numbers to choose from between 12 to 18. We can make any proposal short of amending any law.
“We cannot propose amendments to the Income Tax Act, Customs Act or the Excise Act. But any proposal short of amending a law can be made. We can also outline a vision for the future,” he had said.
It would be interesting to see if Chidambaram continues with the super-rich tax in 2014-15 as well, but indications are he may choose not to since it would need amendment of the law.
In the last Budget, the government imposed a 10 per cent surcharge for a year (2013-14 fiscal) on people earning income above Rs 1 crore.
It covered 42,800 individuals and entities. The minister is expected to use the opportunity to highlight the achievements of the UPA-II government and focus on how the government has been able to contain the fiscal deficit and the current account deficit (CAD), notwithstanding the difficult global situation.
The full Budget for 2014-15 will be presented by the new government in June-July. Chidambaram may explain why economic growth slowed to a decade’s low of 4.5 per cent in 2012-13 and outline steps taken by the government to put India back on a high-growth trajectory.
Although the Central Statistics Office (CSO) has estimated a growth rate at 4.9 per cent in this financial year, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had said it would exceed 5 per cent once the figures were revised.
Key reform measures such as the insurance bill, the goods and services tax (GST) and the direct tax code (DTC) are not likely to be taken up by the outgoing UPA government for want of political consensus.
In an election year, governments have traditionally presented an interim budget or vote-on-account, a shorter version of the budget.
The government, sources said, will come out with revised estimates for tax collection in 2013-14 and projections for the next financial year.
As per current indications, the fiscal deficit this financial year is expected to be less than 4.8 per cent of GDP estimated in the budget, mainly on account of expenditure compression and higher realisation from the 2G spectrum auction.
The fiscal consolidation road map requires the government to contain the fiscal deficit at 4.2 per cent of GDP in 2014-15.
Chidambaram had on several occasions said he had drawn a red line for the fiscal deficit and it would not be breached.
The gap could be 4.6-4.7 per cent of GDP. The CAD, which was a major concern last year, is likely to narrow to below USD 50 billion, or 2.5 per cent of GDP.
It had touched a record high of USD 88.2 billion, or 4.8 per cent of GDP, in 2012-13.

10 Cr Food Processing Jobs – SABKA BHARAT PARTY (C)

16022014
Fenruary16, 2014
Can’t Rs.1 lakh Investment on Plant & Machinery Create One Food
Processing Job – land is free when Farmers are Partners and Promoters?
Maruti Udyog CEO claimed when 2 million cars are sold – around 2
million new jobs are created indirectly and 7 m people are Supported
By These Jobs by auto Industry.
More than Rs.10 Lakh Crores is advanced to Traders and Food Processing
Industry already – but little or nothing was INVESTED essentially
because -
-  When Traders & Companies Can Make More Money By Trading Hoarding &
Moneylending there is no incentive to Invest in Food Processing.
-  Cost of Land is in crores but Farmers can install Food Processing
Units at a fraction of cost. For example Land Price of Rice Mill can
be Rs.10 crores but Plant & Machinery shall cost only Rs.2 crores.
-  Something BJP or other party may need 30 years Rs.50,00,000 crores
- SABKA BHARAT PARTY shall achieve in under 5 years for a fraction of
cost.
-  SABKA BHARAT PARTY shall also PROMISE people shall get CAKE for the
price of Bread. It is already reported A Plain cake cost Rs.320 per kg
and wholesale price of Ingredients is Rs.10 for Egg, Rs.7 for Flour
and Rs.5 for Sugar – Vegetable Oil or Butter cost Rs.6 or Rs.25 =
Rs.28 or Rs.47, Labor & Profits Rs.15. One Kg CAKE can be delivered in
cities for Rs.60-Rs.90 in cities.
-  Thus SABKA BHARAT PARTY shall Easily Implement 10 Crore Job Program.
-  Farmers already engage 70 Crores to 80 crore people – just 15%
engaged in Food Processing, Storage, Packaging and Distribution shall
create 10 crores jobs in 5 years.
-  SABKA BHARAT PARTY programs shall Quadruple Purchasing Power of 100
cr Indians. This too shall create DEMAND for Food Processing.

Delhi Cabinet Resigns

BJP & Congress united to prevent the Janlokpal from being tabled. What happened in the Delhi assembly was there for the nation to see. The Delhi cabinet has decided to resign.

10th Annual National Conference on Electoral and Political Reforms on II Day

16022014

Ranchi, 15th Feb 2014: The second day of the 10th Annual National Conference being organized by Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) and National Election Watch (NEW) focussed on the role of the media in elections as well as the grave necessity to address the most pressing problems in the electoral and political arena.

Role of Media in Elections:

Panelists: Mr. Vipul Mudgal (CSDS), Baijnath Mishr (Sanmarg), Anuj Sinha (Prabhat Khabar), Tanaya Singh (Youth ki Awaaz), Prashant Arya and Ramanjeet Cheema (Google)
  • Although media is termed as the fourth pillar of democracy but unlike other three pillars (legislature, executive and judiciary) it doesn’t have any statutory or constitutional power, says Vipul Mudgal of CSDS
  • Paid news is a menace to the health of democracy of the country. The power of money exercised by a handful of corporate houses are unfairly influencing and moulding public opinion.
  • The self-regulation mechanism has proved to be ineffective. There should be effective laws to govern and regulate the media
  • Internet and social media are increasingly playing a significant role because they provide a level playing field so that information evolves on these platforms in a fair manner. Internet enables everyone to become publishers of information.
  • Internet as a media is also an enabler for transparency and accountability of the reporting of information because it acts as an archive for all the past reports on an issue. Everybody is uploading their content on the internet and this provides an opportunity to everyone to carry out their own research regarding an issue.
Pending electoral reforms:

Panelists: Mr. R Venkataramani (Member, Law Commission), M.L.Sharma (Former Information Commissioner), Justice (Retd.) Vikramaditya Prasad, Ms. Kamini Jaiswal (Senior Counsel, Supreme Court)
  • Political corruption is the root cause of corruption in all other spheres, therefore it is imperative that Political Parties function in a transparent and accountable manner
  • Senior Advocate and Law Commission member Mr. R Venkataramani suggests the setting up of an election tribunal that would screen suitability of candidates to contest elections. This tribunal would receive complaints from citizens regarding candidates whom citizens think are unfit to hold a public office
  • Sources of contributions received and details of expenses incurred by Political Parties must be available in the public domain. The scrutiny of these disclosures will create moral pressure on these parties from the public
  • Pending cases against candidates contesting in elections should be fast-tracked in a court of law, says Justice Vikramaditya Prasad.
  • Candidates against whom charges related to grave offences have been framed in a court of law must be disqualified from contesting elections, says former Information Commissioner Mr. M.L. Sharma
  • Furnishing of incomplete affidavits and affidavits with incorrect information furnished by contesting candidates must be made grounds for rejection of the candidates’ nomination. The Election Commission must be given the powers to scrutinize and reject the nomination on these grounds, says Senior Lawyer of  the Supreme Court Ms. Kamini Jaiswal
The way forward: The 10th Annual National Conference organised by Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) and National Election Watch (NEW) concluded with the following resolutions:
  • As part of the Mera Vote Mera Desh campaign, all the state chapters of NEW will write letters to Political Parties requesting them not to field candidates with criminal records. These letters will be accompanied by details of candidates with serious criminal records who have been previously fielded by the Political Parties.
  • A pan-India campaign will be unleashed before Lok Sabha elections through all possible avenues of communication such as Digital, Electronic, Mobile etc.
  • Voters should press upon Political Parties to include in their manifestos the issues that directly concern voters.
More than 600 attendees of the conference have signed a pledge that they will not vote for tainted candidates or sell their votes for the candidates who try to bribe them with inducements like cash, liquor etc.
