US State Department official has indicated suspicion of Russian involvement in connection with reports of a tapped phone conversation between senior US officials. Ukrainian newspaper, Kyiv Post, reported on Thursday that an audio recording of the conversation between Assistant Secretary of State Victoria Nuland and US Ambassador to Ukraine Geoffrey Pyatt had been uploaded on YouTube.
State Department spokesperson Jen Psaki told a press briefing on Thursday that the conversation was authentic. Psaki said the origin of the YouTube post was unknown, but Russian government officials were the first to tweet about it. She said Nuland had apologized to officials of the European Union for the remarks she made.
In the 4-minute conversation, Nuland and Pyatt are apparently discussing the possibility of forming a new government by mediating between Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych and the opposition. They express frustration and criticize the European Union for its slow response in handling the Ukraine issue.
