Experienced practitioners attending the Convergence, include: Narsanna, Clea Chandmal, Preeti Patil, Vasantbhai Futane, Debal Deb, Ananya Mehta, Rosie Harding, and Peter Fernandes. Ardhendu Chatterjee is also expected to join; and perhaps, Naresh Save and Raju Titus.

Dear All,
We warmly invite you to a collaborative ‘Agro-ecology and Permaculture Convergence’ from Dec 9 to 14, 2016 at the Vanvadi forest in the Sahyadri foothills, about 100 km from Mumbai, going towards Pune.

Objective: The Convergence is for mutual sharing, learning, and documentation of relevant knowledge, experiences and ideas among participants; and for deepening inter-support relationships for such purpose. While the focus will primarily be on western peninsular India, participation is open to all who are actively interested and involved in ecological regeneration/conservation and growing food. Vanvadi is happy to host this collaborative gathering; and to provide basic simple arrangements and a congenial ambience. It however needs equal support from other participants to achieve our shared objectives.

Proposed Daily Plan (9.30 am to 5.30 pm): The Convergence offers each day 2-3 pre-announced workshop sessions of 90 minutes, conducted by seasoned practitioners in areas of their special expertise/experience; and at least one ‘Open Sharing and Discussion’ session of 90 minutes. There will be a 90 minute lunch break at 1 pm, and two 15 minute tea breaks each day, between sessions.  (On the first day, Dec 9, we will begin at 11 am; and on the last day, end at 4 pm.)
Additionally, there would be two 15 minute sessions (post-breakfast and post-dinner) for sharing practical/organizational matters related to daily plans and arrangements. The remaining time will be free for informal interaction; and also for any participant to offer an additional voluntary workshop session/discussion after 5.30 pm (on Dec 11, 12 or 13).

Broad Focus Themes:
Friday, Dec 9: Introductory Sessions on Agro-ecology and Permaculture
Sat Dec 10 to Sunday, Dec 11: Small-scale home gardening (rural and urban)
Dec 12 to 14: Wider issues related to Agro-ecology and Permaculture (eg soil, water, energy, biodiversity, etc.)
More details of the Convergence Agenda and the workshop/discussion sessions (Resource person, subject, date and time) will be announced within a week.

Contribution: A voluntary contribution in the range of Rs 1500 to 1800 per day (inclusive of food and stay) is requested from each participant attending for a minimum of 3 days. For those attending just a day or two, the requested contribution is in the range of Rs 1800 to Rs 2,000 per day. Some concessional (50%) ‘scholarships’ are available for deserving participants who need them, and are willing to volunteer 2 hours each day for support functions like: helping with food preparation, serving, cleaning, filling water, etc.
Documentation of sessions: This is proposed for subsequent wider sharing among participants and others interested. However, we also need volunteers to make this possible. This will entail taking notes, photographs and audio/video recordings for subsequent transcription and editing. About 2-3 dedicated volunteers would be required, who may avail a concessional (50%) scholarship, if needed.

To Register, please fill this online registration form by Nov 18:

Vanvadi: is a 21 year old, 65 acre, collectively owned and regenerated bio-diverse forest, with about 2 acres under cultivated food crops (half rain-fed, half irrigated), and a few seasonal streams and water bodies. (The rock pool is very deep; only for swimmers.) We aspire to evolve as an ecological forest village community. Collective self-organisation with mutual sensitivity, help, and shared learning have been the guiding principles of our past activities and workshops, Our new community house can provide shared (dorm-style) accommodation for about 30 people; an older house can accommodate about 8. Beyond the first 35 registrations, the rest would need to sleep outdoors, or bring their own tent; please register soon! Simple vegetarian food is offered. There is no electricity, no piped water, and net connectivity is poor. But the natural ambience is delightful… lush forest, the calls of birds and insects, and a zillion glowing stars at night … (See Vanvadi Facebook page for conversations and photographs posted in recent years.)

What to bringWarm clothes and sleeping bag, or a sheet and warm blanket are essential. (The days are pleasant, but the winter nights are cold!) Please also carry a torch, whatever you need to take notes, or to swim or bathe in, and any music instrument you play. (Post dinner, we generally have an hour or more of singing, music around a warm fire.) You could also carry any literature, books, posters, … you would like others to see; and perhaps any seeds/planting material that you would like to share/exchange. (Any plastic packaging, etc. you bring should please be carried back.)

AAP National convener statement on current situation

National Convener of the Aam Aadmi Party and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal today demanded that the Prime Minister find a solution within 24 hours to the economic emergency he has unleashed in India. He asked that action be taken against the real hoarders of black money, instead of indulging in emotional speeches that do nothing to solve practical problems faced by crores of Indians today. There is a widespread chaos across the country because of a severe cash crunch, which was a result of the Central Government’s sudden announcement to demonetize Rs 500 & Rs 1000 notes. Crores of people are facing desperate situations in which they have no money to buy basic necessities like food. At a time like this when people are anxious about what lies in the future, there appears to be no effort from the Government to alleviate the suffering of ordinary Indians. After Prime Minister Narendra Modi returned from Japan, there was an expectation that he would announce something that would stop this ordeal immediately. However, that was not the case.
CM Arvind Kejriwal said, “First PM Modi said that in 2-3 days ATMs would be functional and normalcy would return. Then Arun Jaitley declared in a press conference that it would take 2-3 weeks to recallibrate ATMs for new notes and then the situation would get better. Today, when Mr Modi spoke in Goa he asked the people to give the Government 50 days to fix the crisis. The chaos is such that people are not willing to grant even 50 hours more to the Prime Minister. People are dying in the country, of shock and of hunger. Ever since the PM delivered his speech announcing this decision, the panic has only been growing. Labourers are dying in long lines at the ATM, weddings are being called off.”
“I was extremely saddened by the kind of language the Prime Minister has used for those who have been worst hit by this crisis. He said those who are lining up in queues are people who have been involved in scams. Are those people resorting to suicide, those dying at the gates of hospitals, those dying of shock scamsters? What kind of joke is he pulling on the people of India? We demand that he apologize to the people for insulting them,” said AAP’s National Convener Arvind Kejriwal.
The Chief Minister also questioned the Prime Minister’s seriousness in tackling the problem of corruption and black money. “When you say that a majority of Indians are honest and only a few are dishonest, why do your actions indicate otherwise? Why are the millions of honest Indians being forced to line up outside banks and ATMs? Why don’t you take action against your rich industrialist friends who are the real culprits? You had promised to arrest and prosecute Robert Vadra. What came of that promise? You had claimed that all of India’s black money is lying in Swiss banks abroad. Name one step you have taken to bring that black money back to the country. A list of 658 names came from one such bank in 2013 that revealed the identities of all the big fish who have hoarded black money abroad. The problem is that they are all your friends now and you will not take action against them. You are no different from the Congress which had a deep nexus with the corrupt system.”
“The PM wants countrymen to support him for 50 days. How do we support him when there is no food to eat, no milk for children to drink? I don’t think he realises what he has unleashed on the country. Instead of taking the country for a ride with emotional speeches, he needs to go back to his drawing board and rethink this scheme,” said CM Arvind Kejriwal.
The Prime Minister needs to seriously think about what his government is doing to the economic system of this country. In today’s speech he made light of the severe crisis facing this country today. The Aam Aadmi Party demands that the Government find a solution to this problem within 24 hours before the economic system collapses. The Government needs to take real action against black money, and not indulge in theatrics and drama.
