AAP reaction on Central government’s decision to abolish 1000 & 500 currency notes
· It is a Tughlaqi Farmaan which will only cause inconvenience to the common man
· Intention does not appear to be unearth black money
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has always fought against black money and corruption. We are committed to make India free of the twin evils of corruption and black money.
On Tuesday night Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi made an autocratic announcement – a Tughlaqi Farmaan - that 500 and 1000 rupee notes will stop being used as currency with immediate effect and it is being advertised as a surgical strike against black money.
AAP has since held intense discussions on this issue, consulting several economists and experts to find out exactly how will this move stop black money. Unfortunately we found no logical answer on how this move will end black money. On the contrary many queries arise.
The likes of Sharad Pawar, Sukhbir Badal, and Yedurappa, politicians famous for their scams, have welcomed the move. This raises suspicion that were they in the know of this decision before it was announced?
The BJP has said that this was being planned for six months – so were crony capitalists, friendly politicians and BJP leaders in UP given a prior warning? UP is going to polls and did the BJP unit there know of this order way before and did they get time to convert their ill gotten money into other channels?
Secondly, the BJP government has many means of tackling the menace of black money. Before the elections they have made tall claims that they will get back the money stashed in foreign accounts. The BJP government has the Swiss Bank list which contains names of prominent politicians, bureaucrats, and eminent businessmen. They have the Panama list and the list of all those who have defaulted on large loans. What action has the BJP taken on any of these people? What attempts were made to recover the money they have pilfered from our country and to punish them? Has there been any action on Ambani, Adani, Sharad Pawar, Sukhbir Badal, or Yedurappa? The BJP has no answer.
AAP feels that it is completely unacceptable that ordinary people are not allowed to access their own hard earned, tax paid money from their bank accounts. How can the government impose restrictions on withdrawals? The Finance Minister said today that all money deposited will be taxed. Did he think about those poor farmers, auto / rickshaw drivers, who may have saved 10 lac rupees for their daughter’s weddings? With what right can we tax the savings of such low income groups? People who are travelling, who are hosting weddings, who have families in hospitals are in serious difficulty right now. The whole nation is in chaos and cheats are making hay.
AAP leader Sanjay Singh said, “The whole country is in panic. TV channels showed how a person passed away but the hospital refused to release his body as the family did not have the currency to pay for it. People cannot buy milk for their children, they are going without rice and flour. There is panic and confusion at the petrol pumps, toll plazas and hospitals. I have a friend who is a cancer victim and who is travelling by train but was unable to buy food as he did not have currency notes which can be used now. I requested some people in Bhopal to go and help him when the train reached there. How could Modi take a decision that affects 125 crore people just like that? Farmers, poor people, small businesspersons and traders are in a lot of difficulties. Go to a slum and you will see that 1000 rupee notes are being traded for 800 and 500 rupee notes for 400!”
Singh further added, “the BJP should answer that when it stopped 500 and 1000 rupee notes overnight why has it introduced new 500 and 2000 rupees notes? You are encouraging black money; you had said that if the big notes are removed then one would have to carry 10 lacs in sacks. Earlier, those who were paying Rs 1000 notes as bribe, are you trying to make their job easy by introducing higher denomination 2000 currency note.”
