‘More than half of India’s area vulnerable to earthquakes’
November 3, 2016, Delhi: More than half of India’s area is “vulnerable” to earthquakes and several of its cities are at “high risk”, RMS, the world’s leading catastrophe risk management firm said today and advised “closing” these gaps.
Speaking on the lines of the three-day Asian Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction beginning today, Dr. Robert Muir-Wood, Chief Research Officer, RMS, said that high quality and high resolution risk models like those developed by RMS are a “key” first step in helping drive the expansion of catastrophe insurance.
“More than half of India by area is vulnerable to earthquakes and almost forty cities are particularly at risk. The rapid expansion in population and development in India is moving too fast to ensure adequate standards of protection,” Dr. Robert Muir-Wood said.
Dr. Muir-Wood noted that India has the highest number of people exposed to flood risk of any country worldwide, and the fastest increase in flood risk from development and climate change.

He said the widespread damage from earthquake to ordinary buildings as seen in Nepal, after massive quake hit the Himalayan country last year, “could equally be the outcome in many cities in India.”
Referring to events such as 2001 Gujarat earthquake, 2005 Mumbai floods and inundation in Chennai last year, Muir-Wood added, “… The protection gap in India must be closed.”

The project, comprising a series of short films, will see the actor unravel the secrets of Dubai, offering his fans a chance to see the exquisite city through the megastar’s eyes.

IMA/DMA Satyagraha on 16th November
Indian Medical Association(Hqs) and Delhi Medical Association are organising a 2-hour Dharna as part of Satyagraha, at Jantar Manta on Friday, 16thNovember 2016 from 11 am 1 pm.
“Last year, we had postponed our Satyagraha scheduled for 16th November 2015 on the favourable assurances received from the Government of India” said Dr S S Agarwal, National President, IMA.
The dharna is organised as a reminder to the Government to intervene and sort out the major problems faced by the medical profession” said Dr K K Aggarwal, National President Elect and Honorary Secretary General, IMA.
“Not only the inter-ministerial committee slept over the issues, the Government of India has gone ahead with scrapping of MCI and is replacing it with a totally nominated body called National Medical Commission. The bill is anti doctors in character” said Dr A Marthanda Pillai, Immediate Past National President, IMA.“On 16th November the medical fraternity will participate in the dharna, meet press and will hand over a memorandum addressed to the Prime Minister to the respective district magistrates” said Dr Ravi Wankhedkar, National President Elect 2018 IMA.
In a joint statement, Dr R N Tandon, incoming Honorary Secretary General and Dr R V Asokan, Chairman, Action Committee said the “NMC has authority to allow private medical colleges to fix their own rate for 60-99% of the MBBS and postgraduate seats”.
Dr. Rakesh K. Gupta, State President DMA and Dr. Ashwani Goyal, Hony. State Secretary, DMA in a joint statement said Ayurvedics, Homeopaths and others will get registration in modern medicine through Schedule IV of NMC. This will affect the Patient Care and Patient Safety. We will give six weeks to the Government to meet our demands or will be forced to take further course of action.
IMA/DMA has been fighting for the following 6 demands:
• To stop NMC and to suitably amend Indian Medical Council Act without compromising the autonomy of the profession.
• Capping of compensation under Consumer Protection Act.
• Amendments to abolish license Raj and exemption to single doctor clinics in Clinical Establishment Act.
• Punitive punishments only for sex selective abortion and not for clerical errors under PC PNDT Act.
• A Central Act to protect doctors and hospitals from violence.
• To prevent unscientific mixing of modern medicine and indigenous systems. Scheduled drugs to be prescribed only by modern medicine graduates.

New Delhi, 3rd November 2016: In India’s first fashion show dedicated to the glory of Indian wrestlers witnessed first of its kind Turban themed fashion show that got celebrated designers Rohit Bal, JJ Vallaya, Ashish Soni and Rohit Gandhi together to design apparels for ace Indian and International wrestlers. The fashion show organised by ProSportify marked the beginning of second season of Pro Wrestling League that will be played from December 15, 2016 in the country.
After the unparalleled success of the Pro Wrestling League Season 1, ProSportify along with Wrestling Federation of India set the ball rolling in some style today with top Olympians and World Champions walking the ramp in India’s first Turban themed Fashion Show. Star Olympic medallists like Sakshi Malik, Yogeshwar Dutt, Sofia Mattsson and Mariya Stadnik along with CWG medallist Yana Rattigan, Geeta Phogat, Babita Kumari and Bajrang Punia wore vibrant Turbans to mark the occasion depicting the rich Indian history of the headdress from various regions of the country.
Wrestlers ramped up the style quotient wearing collections from world class designers Rohit Bal, JJ Vallaya, Rohit Gandhi and Ashish Soni. It was a perfect platform, one where sports met fashion again.
Commenting on this, Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, President, Wrestling Federation of India said, “Turbans have a rich image in Indian wrestling ethos. We are privileged to witness India’s rich history with star Olympians and World Champions today.”
