| Hurricane Patricia becomes strongest as it nears Mexico's Pacific Coast |
![]() Hurricane Patricia grew into an extremely dangerous Category 5 storm and is heading for Mexico's Central Pacific Coast. US National Hurricane Center has described Patricia as potentially catastrophic. Government has declared a state of emergency for 56 municipalities in the storm's projected path, in the western states. Hurricane Patricia's maximum sustained winds had increased to 260 kilometre per hour, which is a Category 5, the highest rating possible, on the Saffir-Simpson scale used to quantify a hurricane's wind strength. The hurricane is expected to weaken before making landfall in the hurricane warning area today, the Miami-based hurricane center said. Mexican civil defence workers are making urgent preparations to face destructive waves and torrential rain. |
