Mumbai Gangrape

Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar today said strict action should be taken against those involved in the gangrape of a photojournalist in Mumbai. Describing the incident as extremely unfortunate, Ms Kumar hoped that the stringent law passed by Parliament after the Delhi gangrape incident would be put into effect to punish the guilty.

Talking to reporters in New Delhi, Law and Justice Minister Kapil Sibal said the incident must be dealt with utmost seriousness. He said the law must be made effective as the country cannot afford insecurity of women in the society.

Condemning the incident, Chairperson of National Commission for Women Mamta Sharma said arrests should be made as quickly as possible.

The woman intern photojournalist was allegedly gangraped by five men in central Mumbai. The incident took place last evening in Lower Parel area where the woman had gone on an assignment. The 23-year-old woman was working with an English Magazine.

According to police, the men tied up the friend who was accompanying her and raped the woman. The victim has been admitted to Jaslok Hospital and is said to have sustained multiple internal injuries. A gangrape case has been registered in N M Joshi Marg police station.

According to police, the statement of the victim's friend has been recorded and sketches of the culprits have been prepared. Police claimed that the victim has identified two of the accused by their names. The girl told police that two of them were calling each other as Rupesh and Sajid. Police have picked up about 20 people for questioning in the case.

They have also formed special teams to investigate into the matter. Maharashtra Home Minister RR Patil visited the victim in hospital last night. He promised that those responsible would be arrested soon. Meanwhile, the opposition Shiv Sena and BJP have demanded Home Minister R R Patil’s resignation.
