STANDARD CHARTERED MUMBAI MARATHON 2013 RAISES RS 18.61 CRORES FOR CHARITY; INCREASE OF NEARLY RS 2.5 CRORE FROM 2012 EDITION

PRESS RELEASE                                                                                    April 10, 2013
It has been record-breaking season at the landmark 10th edition of the Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon. The international elite athletes set the ball rolling on Race Day by lowering the course records for men and women on January 20, 2013. This momentum has been carried forward in the charity drive associated with the event, resulting in an exponential record-breaking increase in the amounts raised for charity, befitting the 10th anniversary of this unique event.
The milestone year helped inspire all those associated with the charity drive, spearheaded by United Way of Mumbai, the Official Charity Partner, to make that extra effort and the results are evident for all to see. The Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon 2013 motivated a cross section of the city’s citizenry, young and old, from all walks of life, to come together and generate a whopping Rs 18.61 crores in charity for causes of their choice. This figure is an increase of almost Rs 2.5 crores over the Rs 16.07 crores generated in 2012 and will benefit 230 NGOs as compared to 197 last year.
Right from the inaugural edition, in 2004, the event advocated the cause of charity, providing a platform for NGOs, corporates and individuals to come together and raise money for causes of their choice. The results, then, were encouraging enough to predict that in the very near future this event would also rank among the top internationally acclaimed marathons that raise sizeable amounts of money for charity.
This response to the charity drive has surpassed the collection of all previous editions, reaffirming that the city of Mumbai and Mumbaikars have a strong social conscience.
While the spiraling effect of the legacy that the Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon leaves behind through charity is immense, in monetary terms it works out to over Rs 89 crores in ten years.
The charity figures were announced by Dr. Indu Shahani, Chairperson, United Way of Mumbai at a special function held to felicitate the fund raisers at the Trident, Nariman Point on Wednesday. Also in attendance were Shri Chhagan Bhujbal, Hn’ble Minster, Public Works & Tourism, Shri Anil Deshmukh, Hon’ble Minster, Food & Civil Supplies, Shri Jayant Kumar Bhantia, Chief Secretary, Shri J S Sahariya, Additional Chief Secretaruy, Sports & Education, Shri S J Kunte, Commissioner MCGM and Shri Satyapal Singh, Commissioner of Police, among others.
In attendance also was Sumeet Singla Regional Head Corporate Affairs, India & South Asia, Standard Chartered, the title sponsor, Girish Ramachandran, Vice President Corporate, Tata Consultancy Services and Vishal Jhunjhunwala, Head Corporate Brand Tata Consultancy Services, the Associate Sponsor, besides representatives of the various partners to the event.
The Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon has grown leaps and bounds since its inception over the last decade and has garnered an overwhelming response from all quarters of society. Our vision was to create a cornerstone event, one that would grow in magnitude and provide an opportunity for every individual to represent and contribute to a cause. In the last ten years, the Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon has come to stand for something much bigger than a sports event and has emerged as a platform to significantly contribute and raise funds for various charitable causes. This event has raised a remarkable INR 18.60 crores, benefitting over 232 NGOs in its 10th year. This is a significant achievement and truly reflects the desire and willingness of the people of Mumbai to contribute and make a difference to society,” said Sumeet Singla, Regional Head Corporate Affairs India & South Asia, Standard Chartered Bank.
“TCSers as well as our key stakeholders - families and partners - once again participated in large numbers to run in this unique event not just to test their fitness limits but also to contribute to a cause. As part of the Tata Group we are not only committed to giving back to the communities in which we operate in, but to take it a step further and have embraced a philosophy that entails promoting an active, healthy lifestyle among our various stakeholders and the communities we operate in. The Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon has grown to become one of the country's, if not the world's, leading platforms to raise funds for a greater cause and we are delighted to have participated, for the sixth consecutive year, in such a wonderful event,” said N. Chandrasekaran, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director, Tata Consultancy Services.
