Israel postpones early election after PM Netanyahu's surprise coalition with Kadima
In Israel, in a surprise move, the Parliament today postponed plans to vote for an early national election after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu forged a deal for a broader coalition with the centrist Kadima party.
Meir Sheetrit, a senior lawmaker and former finance minister with Kadima, said on Israel Radio that his group has rescued the country from holding an early elections and a broad-based government will be formed. The agreement, to be signed later today, will give Netanyahu the support of 94 MPs in Israel’s 120-member parliament, Knesset. It will also help his government survive without calling an early poll.
Netanyahu had called for an early election on 4th September. After hours of deliberation, the Knesset announced early today that it would not hold a final vote for dissolution.
