Bahrain launching satellite TV channels 'Alarab'
Bahrain's information ministry said on Saturday that the country will
open the Alarab channel with investment from Prince Alwaleed of Saudi
Arabia. The channel is due to start 24-hour news broadcasts early next
year.
The prince, one of the world's richest people, told reporters that the news channel will play an important role in Saudi Arabia's national strategies.United Arab Emirates began round-the-clock news broadcasts from May 6th on Sky News Arabia, a channel funded by the royal family of the emirate of Abu Dhabi.The Gulf region already has 2 news channels funded by royal families -- Al Jazeera in Qatar and Al Arabiya in Dubai.
They have been reporting in detail on the change of government in Egypt and the situation in Syria, but have provided little information about the protests in the Gulf nations.Political Analysts say the royal families want to use the new channels to suppress criticism of the monarchy and prevent pro-democracy movements from spreading to their countries.
