Thangaraja leads, Baisoya slipped to 3rd on day 3 of Toyota 7th NCR Cup
8th March, New Delhi: Sri Lankan No. 1 amateur N. Thangaraja showed the result of his positive attitude as he became the leader of day three of Toyota 7th NCR Cup amateur golf championship at Delhi Golf Club, Delhi. Thangaraja shot four-under for the total of eight-under 208 while Noida’s Jasjeet Singh also shot four-under for the total of six-under 210 in a tie along with overnight leader Honey Baisoya. The young boy Baisoya’s day didn’t go his way as he returned with a card of two-over for the total of six-under 210 to become third and five shots behind was All India Winner, Angad Cheema who finished fourth at one-under 215.
Delhi’s Arshad Ali carded a two-under for the total of two-over 218 to end with fifth position while another Delhi lad Shubhankar Sharma also carded two-under for the day to finish as sixth at three-over 219.
The 30-year-old Thangaraja kept the same strategy like yesterday as he fired birdies on 2nd, 8th, 14th, 15th, 16th and 18th while he bogeyed 4th and 5th. Thangaraja, who keeps smiling all the time, said, “One of my par putt lipped out on 5th and a birdie putt lipped out on 6th and the day went almost same as I expected. Once again, I am going to imagine a good day tonight and will go ahead to win the title without thinking about any pressure.”
Winner of East India Amateur Championship, Baisoya started the day with a triple bogey on 1st and went on further to make a bogey on 9th and double bogeys on 10th and 14th. Birdies on 6th, 7th, 8th, 15th and an eagle on the finishing hole saved him from going away from the top-three positions thanks to his experience of playing at this course for nine years. Even though his card wasn’t very impressive, he said, “I saw at least six bushes from the beginning on 1st, 2nd, 9th, 10th and I lost my ball on 14th from where I played the provisional which then again went into the right bushes. The difficult situations like 2nd hole gives me the confidence of saying that I played better than yesterday where I hit the 3-wood into the right bushes, chipped out for 125 yards, played third shot on the edge of the green and made the 30-foot safe par putt. I am still not out of the contention and I am going to play very safe tomorrow to avoid the situations like today.”
