Japan PM Noda to raise cosumption tax bill
Noda determined to raise cosumption tax bill.Japan's Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda says he will stake his political life on enacting the consumption tax bill during the current parliamentary session.He made the remarks in Tokyo on Saturday.He called on his Democratic Party to unite behind a proposed tax hike.He hopes to submit the bill to parliament before April 1st when the next fiscal year begins, but faces opposition within his party.The Prime Minister likened the issue to a sporting match, saying failure to present the bill by March 31st would be like a semifinal defeat. The final would be when the ruling and opposition parties debate the issue.Noda said his cabinet is determined to realize the proposal by any means possible.
Noda is facing opposition from members of his party, mainly those close to former party leader Ichiro Ozawa and former Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama.He hopes to raise the consumption tax rate from 5 percent to 10 percent in 2 stages by 2015.
