Newt Gingrich has convincingly beaten his main rival Mitt Romney in South Carolina in the latest voting in the battle for the Republican candidacy in the US presidential election.
Mr. Gingrich has seen as the latest champion of the party’s Conservative Right.
With 70 per cent of the vote counted, Mr Gingrich had 40 per cent to Mr Romney’s 28 per cent.
Correspondents say Mr Romney was widely seen as the frontrunner, but the latest outcome is set to turn the race into a long, hard-fought campaign.
