UN to mount major relief effort in Nepal, assures Ban Ki-moon

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon today assured quake-hit Nepal that the world body will mount a major relief effort and support it in dealing with the humanitarian crisis. Ban sent his deepest condolences to the Nepali government and to all those affected by the 7.9-magnitude earthquake that jolted the country yesterday, killing nearly 2,000 people and injuring 5,000 others and said the UN will help the government in coordinating international search and rescue operations and is preparing to mount a major relief effort.
Secretary-General Ban said in a statement that the reports of the devastation are still coming in and the numbers of people killed, injured and affected by this earthquake continue to rise. It is clear that very many lives have been lost. There has also been significant damage to Nepal’s irreplaceable cultural heritage.

The Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi chaired a follow-up meeting today, to review the progress of relief and rescue operations following the major earthquake in Nepal yesterday. The meeting was attended by Union Ministers Shri Arun Jaitley, Smt Sushma Swaraj, Shri Rajnath Singh and Shri Manohar Parrikar, the National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, the Cabinet Secretary Shri Ajit Seth, the Additional Principal Secretary Shri P.K. Mishra, and senior officials from the Government, IMD, and NDRF.
The Prime Minister had chaired a high-level meeting yesterday on the subject.
The Prime Minister was briefed on the work being done by various agencies involved in relief and rescue work, both in India and Nepal. He was also briefed on the situation arising out of the major aftershock that occurred earlier today.
The Prime Minister emphasized the need for further increasing the pace of search and rescue operations, and evacuation of stranded people from Nepal. The Prime Minister directed that in addition to the air route, the road route should also be used for evacuating stranded people at the earliest. He stressed on the need for ensuring coordination among various agencies involved in relief and rescue operations.
The Prime Minister also said that highest priority be accorded to food and water supplies, including milk powder, to the affected areas.
A powerful 6.7-magnitude after shock jolted Nepal and adjoining areas, triggering panic among the people, a day after a devastating temblor killed over 2,000 people. According to the US Geological Survey, the latest aftershock was registered at a shallow depth of 10 kilometres, The tremors – that were felt also in India including Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, Rajasthan, Haryana and Punjab, sent people running for open spaces. The intensity of the tremors was moderate.
Earlier, today four fresh after shocks jolted Nepal , measuring upto 6 on the Richter scale, including one that was reported to hit 41 km west-northwest of Kirtipur. However, there was no immediate report of casualty following today’s tremors.
In Uttar Pradesh mild aftershocks of earthquake were experienced just while ago most of the districts around 12:40 PM.
AIR Allahabad correspondent reports that as per reports available the tremor remained for about 5 to 10 seconds. People came out of their homes after the shock. No damage to life is reported yet from any part of the state due to today’s after shocks. 21 trucks loaded with packed drinking water, biscuits and medicines rushed to Nepal today by the State Government for earthquake affected people.
In Bihar, fresh tremors were felt today again forcing the people to run for safety places. The tremor lasted for about a minute at around 12.40 this afternoon. The report of casualty and damages could not be known immediately. MeT department has again issued alert in view of fresh tremors.
AIR correspondent reports, life and properties have been damaged in North Bihar.Most of the casualities have been reported from East Champaran,Sitamarhi and Darbhanga district of the state. Deaths were also reported from Supaul , Araria, West Champaran , Sheohar, Saran and Madhubani and Lakhisarai. Over 150 victims are undergoing treatment in local hospitals and private nursing homes. The state government has cancelled leaves of doctors and instructed them to be present in the hospital. NDRF teams have been engaged in relief and rescue operations. Chief Minister Nitish kumar said a compensation of Rupees 4 lakh each is being provided to the kin of the deceased while injured are being provided free of cost treatment.
Rescue efforts intensified, with international teams including from India sifting through tonnes of rubble in search of survivors in the Himalayan nation’s worst temblor in over 80 years. The earthquake and the after shocks left behind a trail of death and destruction, flattening houses and buildings, including the iconic Dharhara tower and the landmark Darbar Square in the heart of the capital, trapping scores of people.
Thousands of people spent last night in the open in chilly weather, anticipating more after shocks. The number of injured reached 4,627 till this morning. Around 1,000 people are reported killed in the Kathmandu Valley alone. Officials fear the death toll could rise as desperate search for survivors continued. As many as 17 Mount Everest climbers, including foreigners, were reportedly killed in an avalanche triggered by the earthquake, the worst in over 80 years of Nepal’s recorded history.
According to reports, the route to the base camp has been destroyed and the Indian Air Force choppers were trying to rescue the survivors, around 100 in number who were said to be safe. Two Indians, including the daughter of an Indian embassy employee, were among those killed in the powerful earthquake, an Indian embassy official said.
Over 55 people were killed and 237 injured in various parts of India in a powerful quake, with epicentre in Nepal, which destroyed or damaged several houses and buildings. Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal, bordering Nepal, were the worst-hit.
With Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself monitoring the situation and issuing directives, massive rescue and relief operations have been initiated on a war footing. The Prime Minister, who took stock of the situation at a high-level meeting in New Delhi, directed immediate dispatch of rescue and relief teams, including medical staff, to the affected areas.
Centre has announced a compensation of 2 lakh rupees to the families of those who lost their lives in the earthquake across parts of India.
Home Secretary LC Goyal said, five teams of National Disaster Response Force, comprising 45 personnel each, have been dispatched to Bihar and Uttar Pradesh for conducting rescue and relief operations. Mr Rijiju said, rescue and relief teams have been sent to Patna, Supaul, Muzaffarpur, Darbhanga, Gopalganj in Bihar and Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh.
He said paramilitary personnel have also put on alert so that they could be deployed at a short notice.
Indian Air Force planes have brought back 544 Indians from Nepal, so far. India has sent several aircraft, carrying relief and medical supplies and a 40-member disaster response team. Fifty doctors have already reached there to provide emergency services.

This brand is jointly owned by Kohli, Chisel Fitness and CSE, the sister concern of Cornerstone Sport & Entertainment, which is the agency that manages Kohli. “We will launch gyms of various sizes and with different facilities according to their locations,” said Satya Sinha, Director of Chisel Fitness, a Bangalore-based startup that specialises in corporate fitness. Franchise India will be the commercial and marketing partner in this venture.
The brand under the celebrity-status of Indian cricket team’s vice-captain is hopeful of making it big in around Rs 1,300 crore Indian fitness industry comprising branded fitness chains and standalone gyms.
Kohli is not the first cricketer to switch role from cricket pitch to entrepreneurship in the recent time.
