NAPM condemns killings in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh
Ensure that those entrusted with responsibility of maintaining the law and order do not misuse it !
10th April 2015, New Delhi: NAPM is outraged at the level of bloodshed perpetuated by the police machinery involving the killings of 5 under-trials in Nalagonda (Telangana) and encounter of over 20 woodcutters in the Seshachalam forests in AP. Media reports, evidences and even common sense not only contradict police versions of both incidents but also suggest that these are planned custodial killings and cold-blooded massacres at the behest of state police.
The first incident took place when 5 under-trials, the alleged ‘SIMI’ activists, were being transported from Warangle Jail to a Hyderabad court by the police for a hearing wherein the judgment was to be pronounced soon. This cannot just be a coincident but a patterned act of state violence against people of a particular religion in the name of ‘fighting terrorism’, which must be strongly condemned. Hashimpura, Batla house, Ishrat Jahan case, and many other incidents are painful reminders of similar targeted violence facilitated by the culture of impunity enjoyed by the police and state institutions.
The second incident involving killing of 20 woodcutter from Tamil Nadu, the alleged ‘smugglers’, by the newly formed Red-Sanders Anti Smuggling taskforce of AP in a highly suspicious situation too raises many questions. Media reports suggest that out of 20, at least 7 were picked up by the police just a day before. Further, bullet injuries on face, head and the chest contradict police’s version that they “randomly fired upon the smugglers”. Taking cognizance, the NHRC too has called it a serious violation of human rights.
A protest outside the Andhra and Telangana Bhawan was held today in Delhi along with protests all across the country to demand immediate and impartial CBI investigation as well as judicial probes in time-bound and transparent manner into both cases. We also demand that cases of unnatural death must be filed immediately. Security of witnesses must be ensured. Reparation efforts for the families of victims must be taken. We strongly feel that the issue of impunity in extra-judicial and rampant custodial killings in India is serious violations of rights and threat to ideals of secularism and equality of our democracy. We need stronger and more accountable mechanisms to ensure that those who are entrusted with responsibility of maintaining the law and order do not misuse it.

EPFO suspends Rs 1,000 minimum monthly pension scheme

Retirement fund body, Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation, EPFO has suspended the 1,000 rupees minimum monthly pension scheme from this month. The decision will hit about 32 lakh pensioners. The scheme was launched with effect from September 2014, hiking the pension amount to a flat 1,000 rupees per month for those who were getting lower amount earlier. With the suspension of the scheme, the beneficiaries will get pension at earlier rates.
In a circular to its field offices, the EPFO said it has decided to suspend the scheme in the absence of any direction from the government to continue this benefit beyond March 31. According to the government notification issued on August 19th last year, the benefit of minimum pension was made effective from 1st September 2014 to 31st March 2015.

India has agreed to buy 36 multi-role Combat Aircraft in a flyaway condition as quickly as possible. This was stated in a joint statement by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and French President, Francois Hollande in Paris today. The two countries also agreed on setting up of six units of nuclear power plants totaling 1650 MW at jaitpur in Maharastra. Addressing the media, the Prime Minister, Mr. Narendra Modi who is on a three-day visit to France said that terms and conditions on purchase of Rafale fighter jets would be better than given before and France has supported India desire to promote make in India on Jaitpur plant. He said an agreement has also been signed to reduce cost of production of power by increasing localisation.

AIR special correspondent covering the Prime Minister visit says the Joint Statement refers to the common desire to tackle terrorism and promote security, India and France agreed to intensify their co-operation on counter- terrorism including information and intelligence sharing.
On Climate Change, the statement says the two leaders underlined the importance of joint research and popularisation of clean energy.
On Railways, the two countries agreed to explore for a semi high-speed project on upgradation of the Delhi – Chandigarh line to 200 km per hour. France also agreed to earmark one billion euro over three years for infra and urban development in India
Speaking on the occasion, the President of France , Hollande said that Paris fully supports India’s case for the permanent membership of the UN Security Council and the visit of the Prime Minister and these will take the bilateral relation to a new level.
China hits back at US President

China hits back Friday at US President Barack Obama’s criticism of Chinese construction in the disputed South China Sea, arguing that it is Washington that has greater military muscle. The Chinese foreign ministry’s sharp reply came a day after Mr. Obama warned that Beijing is using its sheer size and muscle to force countries into subordinate positions, amid reports of controversial Chinese land reclamation efforts.
Beijing asserts sovereignty over most of the South China Sea, including areas near the coasts of other states, using a line that first appeared on Chinese maps in the 1940s. The Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Brunei and Taiwan all have overlapping claims.
India and France agree to intensify co-operation on counter terrorism

India and France have agreed to intensify their cooperation on counter terrorism including information and intelligence sharing. In a joint statement after bilateral talks between the two countries in Paris Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and French President Francois Hollande referred to their common desire to tackle terrorism and promote security.
On climate change, the statement said the two leaders underlined the importance of joint research and popularization of clean energy. On Railways, both the countries agreed to explore semi high speech project on up gradation of Delhi-Chandigarh line to 200 km per hour.

Apurvi Chandela Wins India’s Second Olympic Quota Place at the Changwon Shooting World Cup
New Delhi, 11 April 2015: Commonwealth Games Gold Medalist Apurvi Chandela, won India’s second Rio Olympics quota place today after winning the Bronze medal in the Women’s 10m Air Rifle event at the ongoing Shooting World Cup (Rifle/Pistol) in Changwon, Korea. Apurvi shot a total of 185.6 in the Finals, to finish behind Pejcic Snjezana of Croatia who won Gold and Ivana Maksimovic of Serbia, who won the Silver medal. Pejcic eventually finished with a score of 209.1 to Ivana’s 207.7 at the end of the Gold medal match up. There were three Olympic quota places to be bagged in the event.
“A World Cup medal was something that I have been aiming for a long time, and now that I have it, it really makes e very happy. What adds on to the happiness is winning the second quota place for my country for the Rio Olympics,” said an elated Apurvi after winning her medal today.
Talking about her plans going forward she further added, “ This win has helped me feel more confident towards my preparation for the Rio Olympics and I will work towards securing more podium finishes in the competitions I participate in this year. I would also like to thank the NRAI for all the support it has given me to achieve this quota place and medal”
“We are delighted that Apurvi has won India’s second Olympic quota place. She has led the charge for the Indian contingent from the front, being the fighter that she is. Today I reflect back on the day before the 2014 Commonwealth Games finals, where Apurvi tore her ligament and was in acute pain and yet finished with a near perfect score. This was clear evidence of her mental and physical strength which is starting to bear fruit now. Men’s Pistol ace, Jitu Rai had won India’s first Olympic quota place at the Shooting World Championships in Granada, Spain last year, when he won Silver in the 50m Free Pistol event. Each country can win a maximum of 30 quota places from a total of 15 shooting disciplines (including shotgun events), two each from each discipline.
