All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam General Secretary following Jayalalithaa's demise, V K Sasikala was on Sunday elected legislature party leader, paving the way for her to become the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister. She would be the third woman chief minister of the southern state after late Janaki Ramachandran and J.Jayalalithaa.
Sasikala was unanimously elected by the AIADMK MLAs in a meeting held at the party headquarters this afternoon. Her name was proposed by the current Chief Minister O.Panneerselvam. Sasikala is expected to take over as the state chief minister on 9th of this month.
It is being said that the current incumbent O.Panneerselvam would be given a significant post, probably as the deputy chief minister in the new cabinet under Ms Sasikala and that there would be a minor reshuffle in the cabinet.\
The AIADMK legislature party’s official communication about the selection of Ms Sasikala as its president is due to be handed over to Raj Bhavan. The resignation letter of Mr O.Panneerselvam is also to be submitted to Governor Vidyasagar Rao. AIADMK sources said Ms Sasikala may assume charge as chief minister this week itself.
Sasikala took over the party as the General Secretary on December 29th following her unanimous selection in the party General Body meeting. AIADMK leaders said she was accommodated in the position to fill the vacuum in the party created by the demise of late J.Jayalalithaa as the post cannot be left vacant for long due to the political sensitivities.
Later, many leaders made a beeline to Poes Garden where she is residing and urged her to take over the chief minister post as well. The party organs kept on giving wide publicity to the meetings of people from across the spectrum with her.
Intense speculations were ripe that she would replace Mr O.panneerselvam from the helms of affairs of the state administration. Today’s development has put an end to it as decks are cleared for her to assume the new role.
Critics of Sasikala say she has never been into managing either the party or the Government during the tenure of her mentor late J.Jayalalithaa. However, this argument has been dismissed by her supporters saying she is the default leader who has been late Jayalalithaa’s confidante for more than 30 years.
The principal opposition leader in the state Assembly and arch rival DMK working president MK Stalin in a press interaction at Tiruvarur has said the elevation of Sasikala will not gel with the people as she was not the popular choice.
State BJP leader Dr Tamilisai Soundararajan has said the present incumbent O.Panneerselvam has been functioning effectively under stressful situations and Ms Sasikala cannot be equated with late chief minister J.Jayalalithaa. However, she said it is the AIADMK party’s internal matter.
The state Marxist Communist party has greeted Ms VK Sasikala for her elevation. The party’s state secretary G.Ramakrishnan has expressed hope that she would function in a way that would satisfy the aspirations of the people.
Sasikala is to be elected from an Assembly constituency before six months of her swearing in as the chief minister. At present, the Chennai RK Nagar constituency is vacant following the demise of the party’s late charismatic leader and late chief minister J.Jayalalithaa. However, it is yet to be made known from where she would contest. The byelection for the RK Nagar seat is to be held by June this year.
VK Sasikala’s ascension as the Tamil Nadu chief minister was preceded by induction of several prominent leaders to the party headquarters level posts. It was seen as a move to quell any rebellion and to mollify all sections within the party. A team of officials at the Chief Minister’s Office handpicked by late J.Jayalalithaa also gave enough indication that Sasikala is gearing up for assuming charge of the state’s top post. The current chief minister O.Panneerselvam for the third time has resigned from the post who stood in for late Jayalalithaa also twice.
