Juncker says the British ‘have to pay’
EU Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker said that Britain must pay its financial commitments in order to start Brexit trade talks, Media agencies reports. The comments on Friday come a day after EU negotiator Michel Barnier said that there was a “deadlock” over the bill, and not enough progress for leaders to agree on a summit next week to open talks on future relations.
“The British are discovering, as we are, day after day new problems. That’s why this process will take longer than initially thought,” Juncker said in a speech at a university in his native Luxembourg. “If you are sitting in a bar and if you are ordering 28 beers and then suddenly some of your colleagues are leaving… that’s not feasible, they have to pay,” he
Switzerland to hold referendum on banning burqas
Swiss voters will decide whether to ban face-covering garments such as Muslim burqas and niqabs, the country’s government has announced. A referendum on the proposed ban – championed by far-right groups – will take place but is unlikely to be held before next year, AP reported on Friday.
The decision comes after advocates gathered over 100,000 signatures on a petition to put the initiative on the ballot under the system of direct democracy, which lets voters decide major policy issues.
The executive Federal Council will set a date for the referendum, but it is not expected to take place before 2018. The vote would put Switzerland alongside France, Austria and other European countries in prohibiting face-covering garments. Last year, the Italian-speaking Swiss region of Ticino enacted such a ban.
IAEA “had access to Iran’s all locations it needed to visit.”
The international atomic watchdog has confirmed that Iran is fully implementing all of its obligations under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). “As I have reported to the Board of Governors, the nuclear-related commitments undertaken by Iran under the JCPOA are being implemented,” the director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Yukiya Amano, said Friday.
The head of the agency further stressed that Iran is subject to the “world’s most robust nuclear verification regime” and that so far the IAEA has “had access to all locations it needed to visit.”
US President Donald Trump announced that his administration will not re-certify Iran’s compliance with the 2015 JCPOA nuclear agreement. Signed in July 2015 between Tehran and the P5+1 ( China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, the United States and Germany) the deal was designed to gradually lift sanctions against Tehran in exchange for limiting Iran’s nuclear program.
5.4 magnitude earthquake strikes Mexico
An earthquake measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale has struck the southern coast of Mexico, some 7.8km (4.8 miles) from San Dionisio del Mar.
The quake had a depth of 59.5km, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS). It comes less than a month after Mexico was hit by a destructive 7.1 magnitude quake which killed at least 337 people. In early September, an 8.2 magnitude earthquake struck the country, killing at least 98 people and producing more than 5,400 aftershocks.
Mexico sits atop five tectonic plates, the movement of which making it one of the most seismically-active countries in the world.
Boris Johnson is to visit Russia
British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson is to visit Russia later this year, and preparations for his political trip are underway on both sides, Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister Vladimir Titov has confirmed.
Moscow and London are expected to touch upon pressing issues that plague two countries’ relationships. “In the first place, we intend to focus on normalizing Russia-UK relations through dialogue which should not be complicated by artificial linkages or reservations,” the official noted.
The Foreign Office has said in a statement on Friday the UK had “deep differences” with Russia but it is vital “to continue dialogue on matters of UK national interest.”
