Chhattisgarh and Telangana women make final four along with Punjab men
Puducherry, 12th January 2017: Quarterfinal action began on Day 6 of the 67thSenior National Basketball Championship here at the Rajiv Gandhi Indoor Stadium in Puducherry. The first result was no surprise as Chhattisgarh booked a semi-final berth winning their game against Delhi. Poonam Chaturvedi put up another MVP type performance with 60 points in the game. Chhattisgarh’s strategy was simple – put the ball in Poonam’s hands in the post and she took care of the rest. Delhi was unable to contain the Chhattisgarh centre and fell to a 99-67 loss. Delhi captain Raspreet Sidhu put up 27 points.
Earlier in the day, on the outdoor courts, the Madhya Pradesh women’s team qualified for the quarterfinals with a tight win against Rajasthan (77-74). MP’s Sikkim import Nima Doma Bhutia was on fire pouring in 24 points in the game, including 9 straight down the stretch. Her teammate Namrata Huda scored the last four points to put her team up by 3 and close out the game. MP will have an uphill task against defending champions Indian Railways in the quarterfinals.
In the other women’s pre-quarterfinal, Karnataka fell to a spirited Maharashtra side in another nail-biter of a contest. Maharashtra’s international player Shireen Limaye was the difference between the two teams as she took over the game in the second half. Her 34 points in the game included 20 second-half points that kept her team in the contest. A couple of clutch triples by her teammate Rupali Tripathi (12 points) gave Maharashtra a 1-point lead, downing Karnataka 62-61. Maharashtra will face Kerala in the quarterfinals.
Telangana have entered the semi-finals of the Senior Nationals for the second year in a row with an 81-70 win against Tamil Nadu. R. Ramya and M. Gayatri combined for 58 points. Tamil Nadu attempted a late comeback, but it was not enough, as Telangana built an insurmountable lead in the first 3 quarters.
In the men’s pre-quarterfinals, Rajasthan and Haryana sealed quarterfinal berths with victories against Gujarat and Odisha respectively. Rajasthan will take on Karnataka in the quarters, while Haryana will square off against last year’s finalists Uttarakhand, later in the day.
The first men’s quarterfinal of the day saw Punjab shake off its poor run to put on its best performance of the tournament against the Indian Railways. The first half was a close affair with both teams putting up an offensive show. Railways centre Gagandeep Singh remained consistent down low, putting up 25 points in the game. For Punjab, forward Gurvinder Singh Gill (20 points) was effective in the post against the big Railways frontcourt. But in the second half, former India international TJ Sahi (27 points) came out all guns blazing and took over the game. The Railways team were unable to contain his drives and transition play as he turned the game on its head, giving Punjab a double-digit lead. He was ably assisted by guards Rajveer Singh (27 points) and Arshpreet Bhullar (22 points), who maintained Punjab’s 10+ point lead with timely buckets. Despite winning only one league game, Punjab has managed to qualify for the semi-finals where they hope to continue the momentum from this performance.

Goa Congress allies with criminals Babush and Churchill to rescue its sinking ship
Alliance with Goa’s most notorious criminals exposes the Congress’ desperation
The Congress party announced today that it was entering into an alliance with expelled Congress MLA Babush Monserrate and discredited NCP leader Churchill Alemao for the upcoming Goa Assembly election. The Congress is a spent force in Goa and is nowhere in the race to form the Government. This unholy alliance with the most corrupt, criminal and discredited elements of Goa only expose the extent of the Congress’ desperation to make a mark in this election. The fact that the national party had to fall to its feet to convince Goa’s most notorious politicians to rescue its sinking ship in the state, points towards the serious bankruptcy of leadership and ideas of the Congress party going into the polls.
National Spokesperson and Delhi Convener Dilip Pandey said during a press conference held at the national headquarters of the party in Delhi said, “Babush Monserrate is one of Goa’s most dreaded criminals. He was recently arrested under a rape case and has spent time in jail for it. Babush was also expelled from the Congress. What is the reason for the Congress to fall to its feet and join hands again with a man of disrepute like Babush? The other leader the Congress has allied with is NCP’s Churchill Alemao, who is known for his criminal activities, including smuggling and other such illegal acts. All of Goa is aware of the nature of activities Churchill is involved in. His brother has been caught smuggling gold in the past. Churchill Alemao’s name had also surfaced in the Louis Berger scam. The fact that the Congress had to fall to the feet of such leaders in Goa reeks of desperation.”
The Congress Vice-President Rahul Gandhi had claimed that the Congress is a party of clean people. The disconnect between what Mr Gandhi says about his party and what his party truly represents is all for all to see. Babush Monserrate and Churchill Alemao represent the true nature of the Congress party today, and the Goan people are in no mood to support such criminal elements. The Congress is heading towards a near decimation in Goa as the Aam Aadmi Party wave sweeps the state.
BJP has turned the MCDs into a national shame
BJP has turned the MCDs into a national shame with its criminal negligence
BJP has turned the MCDs into a national shame due to the criminal negligence and monumental inefficiency of the political leadership of BJP controlling the MCDs. Not only is this party exploiting the vulnerable employees and contractual workers of these MCDs, it has also caused the residents of Delhi unnecessary hardships.
BJP leadership repeatedly lies about MCD funds, if there was even an iota of truth in their claims then how is it that no merit was found in their arguments by any of the Courts, where the BJP rushed with its fake arguments in its unsuccessful desperate attempts to corner the Delhi government. Infact, the courts are regularly pulling up the MCDs for lack of cleanliness in the national capital.
BJP’s MCD leadership should have some shame and look at what the courts have said about them – lastst on Wednesday, the Honourable Delhi High Court remarked that civic agencies need to be whipped in their backs to make them work!
AAP Delhi Convenor Dilip Pandey said :“The Delhi Government had tabled the 4th Finance Commission recommendations in the Delhi Assembly, we have even said we are in favour of completely implementing them, but the Central government showed no interest in implementing its part.”
Dilip Pandey further said : “BJP should stop making misleading political statements, instead they should respect the constitutional process – the Central Government should commit to fulfilling its responsibilities and the AAP Government would be happy to fulfill theirs.”
AAP Delhi Covenor Dilip Pandey has challenged the BJP-led MCDs to answer the following questions:
- Is it not a fact that since last two years the AAP government of Delhi has not deducted a single penny of outstanding loan of Rs 6,000 crore that MCDs owe to Delhi Government?
- Is it not a fact that MCDs have failed to recover around Rs 1200 outstanding property tax from DDA since last many years?
- Is it not a fact that MCDs have got even the Municipal Reform Fund from the Delhi Government despite not having qualified for it? Parking Collections, Property Tax, Bill Boards – all revenues have been under collected and they don’t deserve this MRF fund which is performance related ?
- Is it not a fact that for payment of salaries of its employees East MCD got almost double the funds of Rs 702 crore in 2015-16 than the amount of Rs 395 crore it had got in the previous year (2014-15) when BJP was ruling Delhi through backdoor during President’s rule?
- Is it not a fact that all the MCDs for the current financial year have been released what was due to them ahead of the schedule in every quarter?
