‘Women and the City:

The case of Ahmedabad’

Abstract:

Asian cities are multi-layered environments. Natural and man-made, historical and modern, public and private create a complex structure of the city, deeply influencing its citizens. The built environment constitutes the image of the city and has a high cultural value as a collective memory. The city of Ahmedabad, which did not have colonial roots like Bombay, Calcutta and Madras, dates back to 1411 AD when Sultan Ahmed Shah established his capital on the eastern banks of the Sabarmati River. The 7th largest metropolis in India, Ahmedabad still contains a medieval core. In the first half of the 20th century, it was called the ‘Manchester of India’, owing to its large textile industry. Today, it is being hailed for its contemporary urban development.  On the one hand, physical planning, mostly in the hands of the government, is limited to macro level Development Plans or Master Plans. In these abstract processes, the neutrality of the user is taken-for-granted and the element of people’s participation is minimal. On the other hand, with growing impact of globalization, rapid urbanization and projects of modernization, Ahmedabad, like other Indian cities, has increasingly become less accessible to the marginalized and less mobile population, women being one of them. In addition, the discourse and critical scholarship about gender and the city has remained rather peripheral in India, creating a major lacuna in theory and praxis, severely limiting inputs to design, policy and implementation.  Spatial arrangements in an urban context help to reproduce structures of gender and also to articulate identities. At various levels, from the city to the neighbourhood and from institutions to the dwelling, the relationship between men and women is expressed in the built form. Focusing on middle class women, this presentation will examine their relationship to inside and outside spaces in the city, particularly in the public sphere, referring to traditional as well as modern markets, streets, parks and gardens, public toilets and urban transportation systems. Based on empirical research, this work-in-progress will attempt to read of the city as a gendered entity.

Speaker:

Ms. Madhavi Desai is an architect, researcher and a teacher. She has an M. Arch from the University of Texas at Austin, USA. She is a partner in ARCHICRAFTS since 1981 and an adjunct faculty at Faculty of Architecture, CEPT University, Ahmedabad since 1986. She has had Research Fellowships from Indian Council for Social Science Research, the Aga Khan Programme for Islamic Architecture in MIT, USA, Sarai, New Delhi and the Getty Foundation, USA. She is a founder member of Women Architects Forum. She is the co-author of Architecture and Independence: The Search for Identity: India 1880 to 1980, New Delhi (1997), Architectural Heritage of Gujarat: Interpretation, Appreciation, Values, the Government of Gujarat, Gandhinagar, (2012) and The Bungalow in Twentieth Century India: The Cultural Expression of Changing Ways of Life and Aspirations in the Domestic Architecture of Colonial and Post-Colonial Society, UK (2012). She is also the author of Traditional Architecture: House Form of the Islamic Community of the Bohras in Gujarat,Pune (2007) and the editor of Women and the Built Environment in India, New Delhi (2007). Currently she has a manuscript ready for a book on Women in Architecture in India. She is also a member of the nominating committee of the Berkeley-Rupp Professorship and Prize at the University of California at Berkeley, USA (2012-2014). She has made presentations at many international conferences and has been widely published.

CONGRESS & BJP JUSTIFY BEFORE SUPREME COURT

NON-DISSOLUTION OF DELHI ASSEMBLY AND PROLONGED PRESIDENT’S RULE

In the petition filed by the AamAadmi Party in the Supreme Court challenging the non-dissolution of the Delhi Legislative Assembly &non-holding of fresh elections, both the Congress and the BJP have filed their affidavits justifying the non-dissolution and prolonged imposition of President’s Rule.

Despite the fact that Supreme Court had specifically asked both the parties to make their stand clear as to whether they are willing to form the Government by joining hands, both the parties have not indicated any willingness to form the Government.

This shows that both the Congress and BJP have joined hands to thwart the democratic rights of the people of Delhi to have a popularly elected Government. This is because they feel that in the event of fresh elections, AAP would get a majority and form the government in Delhi, and both parties would instead have a prolonged Centre’s Rule irrespective of the political party in power at the Centre.

Pawar takes a dig on Narendra Modi and BJP’;s campaign.

Bharatiya Janata Party’;s (BJP) prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi has brought down Gujarat’;s development, Union agriculture minister Sharad Pawar said on Wednesday.

He was speaking at a rally at Bhandup, arranged for the poll campaign of Sanjay Dina Patil, the Nationalist Congress Party’;s candidate for the Mumbai North-East Lok Sabha constituency. The rally saw Pawar portraying Modi as cruel referring to Modi’;s puppy remark and the massacre during 2002 Gujarat riots.

Pawar claimed that Gujarat’;s development was a continuous effort of its erstwhile Congress chief ministers and alleged that Modi is trying to steal the credit by making consistent false statements.

During the chief ministerial period of Madhav Singh Solanki, Amarsinh Chaudhary and Chimanbhai Patel, Gujarat was developing at the rate of 16% to 17.5%. However, during the period of Modi’;s rule in the last 12 years, the growth has come down to 9% or 8%. Modi has brought down the growth of Gujarat, said the NCP supremo. 

Pawar took a dig at Modi and BJP’;s campaign – ‘;Ab ki Baar Modi Sarkar’;- stating that it is for the first in the history of independent India that a politician has come up and started portraying himself as the next Prime Minister, and going down to the streets asking people to vote for him.

“In democracy people choose the Prime Minister, and not vice versa,” said Pawar commenting on Modi. 

“The elections haven’;t concluded, the counting of ballot has not started, the results has not been announced and neither has the majority been proven in the Parliament. But here is one man who has been harping of himself as the Prime Minister,” said Pawar.
