The first ever EU office in Myanmar

European Union opened its office in Myanmar's financial city, Yangon, amid the country's political reforms toward democratization.The first ever EU office in Myanmar will help promote personnel exchanges between the two sides, and support European companies that want to make inroads into the country. The office was launched only days after the EU decided to suspend all of its sanctions on Myanmar for one year, except for a separate arms embargo. EU members agreed on the suspension on Monday, less than a month after Aung San Suu Kyi's opposition party, the National League for Democracy, swept by-elections contesting 45 seats. The sanctions had been in place for over 15 years. At the opening ceremony on Saturday, EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton cut the tape together with Myanmar's pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi.Ashton told the gathering that she hopes the office will open a new chapter in relations between Myanmar and EU countries. Bus crashes and police say 7 dead

A bus has crashed into a wall of an expressway in Gunma Prefecture, north of Tokyo, killing seven people. Local police say the deaths from cardiopulmonary arrest were confirmed by doctors at the scene. The accident took place shortly before 5 AM on Sunday near a junction on the Kan-etsu expressway in Fujioka City, Gunma Prefecture. Local fire and emergency authorities say at least nine people were seriously injured. Pictures taken from an NHK helicopter show that the front part of the bus is badly damaged, and much of the vehicle is sticking into mid-air off the expressway.

Maruti Suzuki India Q4 net down 3 pc

  The country's largest car maker Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) on Saturday said its net profit declined by 3.04 per cent to Rs 639.8 crore for the fourth quarter ended 31st March, 2012, over the same period of previous fiscal.  The company had posted a net profit of Rs 659.9 crore in the same period of previous fiscal, MSI said in a statement. The company's net sales, however, rose to Rs 11,486.4 crore for the fourth quarter of 2011-12, as compared to Rs 9,796.7 crore in the corresponding period of previous fiscal. For the year ended March 31, 2012, the company posted a net profit of Rs 1,635.1 crore, down 28.55 per cent, as against Rs 2,288.7 crore in the previous financial year. Virtually setting the ball rolling for next year's assembly elections in Karnataka, Congress President Sonia Gandhi on Saturday launched a scathing attack on the ruling BJP and asked her partymen to set aside individual ambitions and work together to bring it back to power.
