Naoko Ishii named World Bank fund chief
Naoko Ishii has been named to head a World Bank fund working to address global environmental issues.
Deputy Vice Finance Minister Naoko Ishii was officially appointed CEO and Chairperson of the Global Environment Facility. The Japanese government had recommended her for the post.
The Global Environment Facility supports efforts to protect the environment in developing countries and address climate change. More than 180 countries are members.After joining the Finance Ministry in 1981, Ishii served as an economist at the International Monetary Fund and as the World Bank's Country Director for Sri Lanka and Maldives.She has been in her current position since August 2010.
Competition has been intense for posts at international organizations due to the rapid growth of emerging economies.
